Archives Program Manager, Boston Children’s Hospital, (Boston, MA)

Job Posting Description

The Archives Program Manager shall be responsible for:

  • Administering the administrative aspects of the archives including developing an annual budget and developing/reviewing policies and procedures. Manages goals and strategic plans for the Archives Program. Provides guidance to staff and volunteers.
  • Coordinating collection development and management, using tools and platforms such as including ArchiveIt, ArchivesSpace, and Preservica. Identifies and appraises materials for their archival value. Manages, organizes and makes accessible archival materials. This includes making archival collections available through the Hospital library’s catalog/website. Manages onsite and offsite physical collections. Maintains and regularly evaluates an emergency preparedness and disaster recovery plan for archival materials.
  • Developing and leading log-term digital preservation strategy. Acquiring, processing, and preserving born-digital material and develops protocol for the digitization of analog/print material.
  • Building relationships with clinicians, researchers, administrators, marketing, the Trust and other staff and employees to collaborate on hospital initiatives and special projects, including interviews with staff, anniversaries, and commemorations. Organizing and directing the Hospital’s Archives Committee, a volunteer advisory board made up of staff and associates.
  • Planning and directing fundraising projects. Coordinating annual and ad hoc activities such as mailings and tours. Collaborating with other departments to plan specialized tours in celebration of anniversaries and other commemorations.
  • Planning, researching, and producing and presenting standing and mobile historical exhibits. Creating digital exhibits for internal and external websites. Collaborating with others to develop and implement digital presentations for marketing, outreach and anniversary events.
  • Coordinating and executing outreach programming including history tours, historical presentations, and digital exhibits. Promoting the Hospital’s archives program within and outside of Boston Children’s Hospital. Writing historical pieces for hospital publications. Coordinating document planning activities with departments/divisions so that materials are properly retained and/or maintained offsite.
  • Providing reference assistance to researchers, both within and outside the hospital, needing historical materials and information. Manages copyright and permissions for use of BCH archival material

To qualify you must have:

  • Master’s degree in Library Science or a closely related field and a minimum of three years of previous related experience as an archivist or working in a closely related profession with at least one year in a hospital or comparable facility.
  • Knowledge of archive program management is required; specific experience in a healthcare environment is preferred.
  • Analytical skills and judgment to interpret data and take appropriate action in circumstances and situations that vary is required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and provide empathy in difficult interpersonal situations is required.
  • Ability to work with diverse internal and external constituencies.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of artifact and document conservation and handling is required.
  • Excellent negotiating and financial management skills are required.
