Job Description

We are seeking a dynamic and innovative STEM Librarian with a commitment to undergraduate education and user-focused librarianship. The STEM Librarian manages the Oberlin College Libraries’ Science Library, located in the Science Center, and supports the teaching and research functions of the biology, chemistry, geology, neuroscience, and physics departments. The STEM Librarian fosters a community of practice on campus and remotely.

Reporting to the Director of Libraries, this is a full-time twelve-month position within the Oberlin College Libraries. The ideal candidate will be well versed in emerging areas of information science, scholarly communications, open access, open educational resources, research methodologies, software tools, and data services in the STEM disciplines.

The position operates in coordination with others in the Reference and Instruction Group and the Associate Director for Public Services to ensure consistent access services and outstanding user experience across Oberlin libraries. The position also contributes to planning, policy development, resource management, and decision-making within LRE and, as a member of the Libraries’ leadership team, appropriately to the college library system as a whole.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the Science Library facility/spaces and operations. This includes supervision and training of one assistant and student workers, as well as oversight of the departmental budget.
  • Plan, provide, and evaluate research support, reference consultation, outreach, and instructional services and programs for faculty and students within the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.
  • Work closely with the libraries’ digital scholarship team to teach and develop students’ digital data proficiency in science and technology and to identify and incorporate emerging technologies in instructional initiatives as appropriate.
  • Provide guidance in the research landscape of STEM fields so that faculty and student researchers understand their own discipline’s research culture, conventions, and trends. This includes the production of discipline-specific information navigation resources in formats such as LibGuides, online tutorials, and other effective technologies in library instruction.
  • Analyze, develop, and manage the science collections and monitor collection development funds for all science materials and other liaison areas as assigned.
  • Work with STEM stakeholders—including students, faculty, and librarians—to ensure effective and efficient selection of library resources in the sciences and other liaison areas to integrate those library resources and discipline-specific technologies or analytical tools, both open source and proprietary (e.g., ArcGIS, SciFinder, ChemDraw, Excel, Python, Zotero), into the STEM research life cycle.
  • Ensure a positive, service-oriented atmosphere within the Science Library.
  • Serve on library committees and college-wide committees.
  • Work on special projects and other duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrate professional development through scholarly or creative activities and annual reflective analysis.

Required Qualifications

  • BA in the natural or physical sciences
  • Graduate degree in the field of library and information science from an ALA-accredited institution or international equivalent
  • Excellent and up-to-date bibliographic knowledge in at least one of the natural sciences
  • Experience providing course-related instruction
  • User-focused and committed to service excellence with all users
  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion
  • Outstanding verbal, written, presentation and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated record of creativity and innovative thinking
  • Willingness to pursue additional education and skills development to complement the learning environment reflected in a dynamic academic setting
  • Minimum of two years of relevant experience
