Metadata and Cataloging Management Librarian, American University, Washington D.C.

Position Summary

Metadata and Cataloging Management Librarian provides leadership, management, and technical expertise for receiving, metadata, cataloging, and their workflow management for library resources. The position leads the Metadata Management Unit, which is responsible for metadata creation and maintenance for library collections across multiple platforms, serials maintenance, and physical resources workflows. The incumbent monitors trends in cataloging, metadata, and other relevant vendor communities such as BIBFRAME and Linked Data, and cultivates a forward-thinking approach to cataloging and metadata practices. This position supervises at least four FTE who provide support in fulfilling the responsibilities of the unit.

Salary range $80,000-$87,000, commensurate with experience. Hybrid work schedule, 2-1 retirement matching, and other great benefits.

Essential Functions

  1. Leads the library’s Metadata Management Unit. Provides leadership, management, and technical expertise to plan and oversee regular unit work and special projects. Hires, trains, and onboards unit staff and carries out ongoing performance evaluation, including ongoing professional development for staff. Contributes to strategic and annual planning goals for the unit, department, and library. Creates and maintains unit workflow documentation and statistics. Supervises at least four full-time staff positions.
  2. Provides expertise for ensuring high quality metadata in library systems.  Oversees workflow management for physical materials and seeks ongoing system improvements to create efficiencies in managing physical resources. Creates and maintains import and integration profiles in the Library Services Platform. Collaborates with Access Services and other departments to plan for and carry out special projects as needed. Serves as a standing member of the library’s Alma and Primo administrative teams as the relevant cataloging subject expert. Serves as the American University representative to the WRLC Metadata Committee.
  3. Collaborates with the Metadata Coordinator, Archivist for Special Collections and Digital Initiatives, and others as needed to plan for and carry out bibliographic description and metadata for archives, special collections, and digitized resources. Evaluates staff work to ensure metadata and cataloging performed meet agreed upon standards. Collaborates with Scholarly Communication Librarian, Metadata Coordinator, and others as needed to establish metadata input guidelines for metadata work in the institutional repository.
  4. Other duties as assigned.
