Description:

Responsible for maintaining the State Library’s electronic documents storage repository,
DSpace. Performs original and copy cataloging of monographs, serials, and other
library materials and completes any associated name authority work and processing.
Assists with library website management and content creation for the library’s blog,
email newsletter, and social media sites. Assists with collection development and
management and all other inventory projects. Supervises and directs the work of
Technical Services interns and assigned staff.

  1. Responsible for maintaining the State Library’s DSpace repository by creating,
    adding, and editing records for electronic documents. Responsible for the architecture
    and structure of the DSpace repository. Creates and documents procedures, instruction
    manuals, trains staff members and interns in using DSpace. Prepares for succession
    and backing up of DSpace with Atmire and in SharePoint and makes recommendations
    to the Technical Services Manager regarding DSpace. Provides usage reports monthly,
    annually, and as requested.
  2. Performs original and copy cataloging of monographs, serials, and all other library
    materials in special formats according to RDA and Library of Congress (LC) standards
    using OCLC MARC format in order to provide access to library materials. Provides
    authority control for names, series, and subjects used in cataloging records in
    accordance with current library policy in order to provide proper access to library
    materials in the online catalog. Processes newly cataloged materials and edits
    bibliographic and item record information in the online catalog. 
  3. Assists Technical Services Manager with Library webpage management and maintenance. 
  4. Writes and maintains Technical Services documentation and manuals.  
  5. Trains library staff and interns in Technical Services practices and procedures.  
  6. Shares in regular creation of content for the library’s website, blog, email newsletter, and social media sites. 
  7. Assists in collection development and management and library inventory projects. 
  8. Maintains currency in the library profession and library technical services by attending and participating in meetings, seminars, and training sessions. Serves on and/or chairs various State Library Teams. 
  9. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications – External

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: 

REQUIRED WORK EXPERIENCE:  At least one year of full-time, or equivalent part-
time, experience as a Professional Librarian. 
 
SUBSTITUTIONS:  None.   
 
LICENSES:  
 
–  Certification as a Professional Librarian by the Massachusetts Board of Library
Commissioners. 
 
–  Based on assignment, travel may be required.  Those employees who elect to use a
motor vehicle for travel must have a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor
Vehicle Operator’s license or the equivalent from another state.

  1. Considerable knowledge of Library and Information Science, including knowledge of
    current cataloging rules and practice and MARC format. 
  2. Working knowledge of common equipment and software used in libraries and
    information centers. 
  3. Experience with integrated library systems and OCLC. 
  4. Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form. 
  5. Ability to work independently. 
  6. Ability to maintain harmonious working relations. 
  7. Knowledge of Microsoft Office 365, Adobe Creative Suite, and the ability to learn
    other software applications independently.  
  8.  Ability to analyze policies and procedures; recommend and implement innovations as
    required.
