Liaison Librarian, University of Vermont, Burlington, VT

Job Description

The University of Vermont Libraries seek three creative and service-oriented individuals to join our team of librarians reporting to the Director of the Information and Instruction Services Department. The three new hires will support the teaching, learning, and research endeavors of the University. These individuals will have the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues in reimagining how to best support our users’ needs in a time of change. We are seeking both experienced librarians and those who are new to the field. Come and grow with us!

Responsibilities

The University of Vermont Libraries supports all academic units on campus and the general research needs of students, faculty, staff and the public. These three positions will serve as liaisons to the humanities (including world languages), social sciences, and business – to be determined by experience and applicant interest. Successful librarians in this position will: 

  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with students, faculty, and staff in assigned
    liaison areas and other areas as appropriate.
  • Provide curricular and co-curricular support through the development and teaching of
    information literacy and research skills.
  • Cultivate partnerships with liaison departments and faculty to support disciplinary information
    literacy and research.
  • Provide research, reference, and expert searching assistance to a wide array of users. This
    support includes reference and one-on-one and group research consultations virtually and face-
    to-face. Create online instructional materials such as research guides, tutorials, and integrated
    library services.
  • Contribute to collection development decisions for physical and online materials.
  • Develop, with support from mentors, an agenda for scholarship and/or creative activities.
  • Engage in service activities at library, university, association, and/or community levels.
  • Participate actively in committees, working groups, teams, projects, or other initiatives that
    further the Libraries’, the University’s, and the profession’s missions.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree (M.L.S., M.S., or M.A. in Library or Information Science, or other variation) from a program accredited by the American Library Association or the equivalent professional credential in librarianship. Applicants who have a Masters’ Degree or PhD in another field and have completed a formal program providing training as a librarian (e.g. fellowship, graduate certificate), combined with at least one year of experience with at least one year in a professional role as an academic librarian may also be eligible for appointment as Library Assistant Professor. Note: candidates who anticipate completing their degree within three months after their initial date of hire are encouraged to apply.
  • Work or educational experience (internship, practicum, coursework, etc.) in an academic library.
  • Evidence of effective oral and written communication necessary for professional communication and scholarly work.
  • Ability to engage with a variety of people with a wide range of cultural backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness of collaborating with others as part of a team.  
  • Ability to take initiative, develop and carry out projects, and manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Demonstrated familiarity and facility with the research process.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and accessibility; awareness and understanding of diverse thought, cultures, race, religion, gender, and other differences.

Salary and Benefits

Librarians at the University of Vermont hold faculty appointments without tenure. As such, librarians are expected to perform in three areas: Educational Mission (Librarianship), Scholarly and Creative Activity, and Service. Decisions about rank at time of initial hire will be based upon each candidate’s previous experience will be based upon performance in all three areas and will be at one of the following three ranks:  

Library Instructor (Minimum salary: $56,878) : The position of Library Instructor is intended for faculty who the department plans to hire as a Library Assistant Professor, but who presently lacks a terminal degree and may be appointed for only one year. Conversion to the rank of Library Assistant Professor will occur when the requirements for the terminal degree have been satisfied.  

Library Assistant Professor (Minimum salary: $62,334): Appointment at this rank or higher requires a Master’s degree (M.L.S., M.S., or M.A. in Library or Information Science, or other variation) from a program accredited by the American Library Association and the potential to develop and to meet substantially the UVM Libraries Standards for Reappointment and Promotion.   

Library Associate Professor (Minimum salary: $74,801: Appointment at this rank typically requires 6 or more years of professional (post-MLS) experience and a consistent record of accomplishment in librarianship, scholarly and creative activity, and professional service.
