Instruction Librarian, College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, MA

Job Description

The Instruction Librarian is responsible for information literacy (including news, visual, and media literacy) instruction in both physical and virtual formats to all students at College of the Holy Cross. This position emphasizes creative and progressive information literacy solutions to prepare our students to succeed in every aspect of their academic career. This includes asynchronous digital objects and programming as well as classroom pedagogies. The Instruction Librarian will collaborate with the FYE Librarian and Coordinator of Research & Information Literacy to meet RTL goals; this position will serve as liaison to one or more departments and also collaborate with Educational Design and Digital Media Services (part of ITS). The Instruction Librarian will serve as advisor to library colleagues for the creation of digital learning objects, and the best use of appropriate software and technology for undergraduate library instruction.

This Librarian – Designs and implements templates and online materials for information literacy instruction. Teaches a high volume of information literacy sessions and stays abreast of related programming from the Center for Writing, Academic Services and Learning Resources (ASLR), and Student Affairs. Collaborates with those partners, as well as fellow librarians, to develop a sustainable program for our students’ lifelong learning. Participates in strategic planning for Holy Cross Libraries, for RTL, and for initiatives geared toward scaffolded information literacy goals, complementing the work of our FYE Librarian. Provides research and instruction expertise, including personal research sessions and virtual reference assistance. Serves as liaison to one or more departments and advises colleagues on best practices in online library instruction. Maintains a flexible schedule to allow for after-hours instruction. Pursues professional development and stays abreast of best practices in the field. Serves on committees and teams; serves as team leader when appropriate. 

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with other RTL librarians in the creation, implementation, and assessment of information literacy learning goals
  • Design and deliver information literacy sessions, classes, workshops, and other instructional materials using a variety of modalities
  • Create asynchronous instruction materials using LibGuides, Canva, Camtasia, and/or other similar platforms
  • Stay abreast of pedagogical theories and practices, particularly as they relate to diverse students in a liberal arts college
  • Serve as liaison to one or more departments, engaging in collection development and other library services as well as research and instruction support
  • Build relationships and collaborate with key campus partners to provide a well-rounded information literacy experience for our students
  • Include consideration of learning styles and diverse delivery methods for impactful and inclusive learning experiences
  • Coordinate efforts to embed library resources and services in the college CMS?

Requirements

  • Required: ALA-accredited MLIS
  • Required: Excellent communication skills, not only for in-class instruction but also for high quality digital materials; ability to easily facilitate meetings with faculty and colleagues
  • Required: Solid understanding of pedagogies in academic libraries
  • Required: Solid understanding of research databases and discovery platforms
  • Required: Demonstrated experience in a teaching environment
  • Preferred: Experience working in an academic research setting or equivalent
  • Preferred: Fluency with graphic or online design that would apply to the library instruction landscape
  • Required: Basic understanding of copyright law, intellectual freedom, and ethical use of information

Additional Information

This is a full time, exempt level position. The College is committed to providing competitive market pay for its employees.  The salary range for this position is $61,000 to $63,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications.
