Reference Librarian (Part-Time), Cary Memorial Library, Lexington, MA

Cary Memorial Library has an opening for a part-time Reference Librarian in our Adult Services Department. Reference Librarians work at the busy Main Adult Services Desk, answering reference/research questions and providing readers’ advisory. Other tasks include instructing patrons on use of equipment and software, and assisting with library programs. Reference staff also support circulation tasks such as museum passes and the use of our self-check machines. There will also be occasional substitute opportunities at all service desks including Reference, Children’s and Teen.

$31.34 – $38.97 hourly, plus differential pay on weekday evenings and Saturdays and time and a half pay on optional Sundays. Accrued vacation and sick time benefits. No other benefits are available. This is a Union eligible position.

14 hours a week for three out of four weeks and 18 hours every fourth week, for an average of 15 hours a week. This includes one evening a week and every fourth Saturday. Opportunities to work Sundays for overtime pay are also available.

The ideal schedule is Monday 9am-12pm, Wednesday 10 am -6pm, Thursday 5pm-9pm, and every 4th Saturday 11am-3pm

Qualifications:

An MLS degree from an ALA accredited institution is preferred, or equivalent combination of education, certification and experience. The ideal candidate will have experience in reference service, working at a public library, and familiarity and comfort with computers and automated library systems. We are looking for people who are self-motivated, possess the ability to establish rapport with patrons of all ages, demonstrate a respect for diversity and promote inclusive services, and demonstrate attention to detail as well as the ability to multi-task.  

Language skills are a plus, particularly Chinese or Korean.
