Social Sciences Liaison Librarian, Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA

Job Description

The Social Sciences Liaison Librarian develops and delivers library and research support to faculty, students, administrators, staff, and others in the subject areas of history, sociology, criminal justice, law, Women’s Studies, political science, international studies, geography, and government documents, including research assistance, instruction, and collection development activities. The Liaison Librarian serves as the primary contact person between the Libraries and departments, programs, and research centers in the social sciences departments of the College of Arts and Letters.

Minimum Qualifications

  • American Library Association accredited masters degree in library science or masters degree in library and information science, or the international equivalents.
  • Basic knowledge of the information and research needs of assigned disciplines and an understanding of current trends and issues in scholarly publishing and communication
  • Considerable demonstrated interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
  • Considerable demonstrated analytical skills including independent problem solving and critical thinking
  • Considerable demonstrated ability and willingness to work collaboratively with others to address complex questions and devise solutions
  • Considerable demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a demanding and rapidly changing service-oriented environment
  • Basic ability to cultivate collaborative relationships with teaching faculty in assigned disciplines
  • Basic ability to facilitate access to appropriate information resources by building local collections for the social sciences disciplines in the College of Arts & Letters.
  • Considerable experience using technologies commonly used in library and office operations
  • Basic library experience supporting social sciences.
  • Basic prior work experience collaboratively building services and developing solutions with students and teaching faculty in assigned disciplines
  • Basic experience teaching, training, or providing educational presentations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate or undergraduate coursework or degree in the social sciences or in social sciences librarianship
  • Some training in the use of U.S. Government Publications or the Federal Depository Library Program
  • Considerable demonstrated understanding of current issues in academic communication and publishing
  • Considerable experience teaching in a library environment, including planning and evaluating
    instruction to gauge effectiveness.
  • Considerable experience utilizing and maintaining documents acquired through the Federal Depository Library Program
  • Basic prior work experience identifying, and meeting research needs of library users
  • Some prior work experience in social sciences librarianship within higher education.
