Job Description

Bowdoin College seeks a collaborative team member to join the Office of Institutional Research, Analytics, and Consulting, which collects, analyzes, and interprets data to inform College conversations and decision making.

The Data Analyst will extract, clean, and analyze data, providing summaries, in tabular forms and visualizations, to diverse internal and external stakeholders, including the College’s senior leadership. With a “can-do” attitude, the analyst works with partners across the College to ensure that data is accurate and promotes ways to improve data quality. The analyst prepares official numbers to report to federal agencies, college guidebooks, and peer exchanges, and will be responsible for peer comparison and benchmarking data. The Data Analyst will be trained to use the institutional data warehouse to summarize data for various departments across the College.

The office’s team is led by the Senior Vice President for Institutional Research, Analytics, and Consulting, a member of the presidential cabinet.

Education/Skills Requirements

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy, passionate about data quality

  • Discretion and the ability to be tactful, discreet, and maintain confidentiality with sensitive data
  • Proven ability to work independently, be self-directed, and manage multiple tasks and changing priorities
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage several projects simultaneously in fast paced environment
  • A flexible, constructive, and positive approach to work
  • Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and interact with individuals of different backgrounds
  • Advanced EXCEL skills (e.g., pivot tables, functions, such as if, sum if, and vlookup, charts)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Office 365, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Demonstrated excellence in customer service, responding to requests in a timely fashion with good judgement
  • Committed to learning and applying new skills

Preferred

  • Advanced degree, preferably in the field of education, social science, statistics, business, library & information science, computer science, or a related field
  • Knowledge of SQL programming language
  • Experience working with relational databases (e.g., MS SQL Server, Oracle) and their management tools, such as TOAD or SQL Server Management Studio
  • Exceptional verbal, written communication, and presentation skills
  • Tolerance for ambiguity (an ability to make progress in unclear, uncertain, or novel situations)
  • Proven ability to produce creative and effective data summaries and visualizations
  • Understanding of descriptive and inferential statistics
  • Knowledge or experience with statistical packages such as SPSS, SAS or R
  • Knowledge of data visualization best practices
  • Able to apply principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion to work as a data practitioner

Experience Requirements

Required

  • At least one year of experience merging data and developing reports to answer specific questions
  • Experience collecting/extracting, organizing/merging, verifying, and cleaning data from a variety of sources for reporting and analytical projects
  • Experience summarizing data using tables and charts, tailored for specific audiences
  • Experience managing multiple projects and priorities with deadlines

Preferred

  • Experience summarizing data using descriptive and inferential statistics
  • Experience working individually with clients to understand their information needs, consult with them on potential data sources, and communicate the data findings
  • Experience with Tableau, Power BI, or similar reporting tools
  • Experience with regression and other predictive modeling methods
  • Experience applying external standards to an organization’s data
  • Experience in an institutional research office or higher education

Standard Work Days and Hours

  • M-F 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM; occasional evening and weekend work may be required.
  • Hybrid arrangements will be considered, with a minimum of 3 days in the office for the first 6 months.
