Brown University Library seeks an engaged professional for the position of Cataloging and Metadata Librarian who can contribute to the BUL’s strategic agenda of creating inclusive and anti-racist descriptive metadata for the Libraries collections. Working under the supervision of the Head of Cataloging and Discovery, this position performs original and complex copy cataloging of Brown Library’s resources in all formats and languages, creates authority records, and participates in local catalog maintenance, including reparative cataloging projects. The Cataloging and Metadata Librarian provides important and timely intellectual access to materials in support of the teaching, learning, and research needs of the Brown community. This is an excellent opportunity to work collaboratively with colleagues across the Library, the University, and the Library profession who are dedicated to contributing to new cataloging and metadata practices that include describing more diverse collections, creating more inclusive descriptions, and contributing to reparative practices that address historical omissions and harmful language.

Qualifications:

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in library and information science or an equivalent combination of education and education and experience.
  • Experience working in an academic or research library.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills. Strong customer service orientation
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion as well as an understanding of the contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace.
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, organizational, problem-solving, time management, and communication skills
  • Professional cataloging experience in an academic or research library setting
  • Experience creating MARC records
  • Experience with a national cooperative cataloging program such as NACO, BIBCO, CONSER or SACO. Experience in performing name, series, and subject authority work.
  • Proficiency with AACR2, DCRM, LC classification, LC subject headings, and the MARC21 format. Experience with Alma/Primo
  • Experience with OCLC connection
  • Experience managing and prioritizing multiple cataloging projects
  • Working knowledge of at least one classical and one modern European language Cataloging experience in Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese or Hebrew preferred Experience cataloging serials or special formats preferred
  • Familiarity with data normalization and transformation tools (Open Refine, etc.)
