Collections Management Intern, The Nantucket Historical Association’s Collections Center, (Nantucket, MA)

Description

The Nantucket Historical Association’s Collections Center is offering two graduate-level internships in collections management. Individuals with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and abilities are encouraged to apply.

Reporting to the Director of Collections & Research Services and with day-to-day direction from the Collections Manager, interns gain hands-on experience with collections management and object storage. The interns first learn artifact processing procedures, including cataloging using the collection’s management database, object photography, and appropriate object housing. Once they are comfortable with these processes, interns focus on inventorying, cataloging, and relocating targeted collections groups. They create original catalog records and update object locations as needed, in consultation with the Collections Manager. They note conservation priorities, document workflows, and compile cataloging statistics.

Requirements: Enrollment in or graduation from an accredited master’s program; completed coursework in collections management and practice or relevant experience with museum collections

Skills/Knowledge desired: Familiar with collections management databases; highly organized; attention to detail; solid time management skills with the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines; excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to work independently, to seek clarification, and to offer suggestions when needed; strong research skills.

The collections management internship is twenty weeks with a Tuesday, January 17, start date, though there is some room for flexibility. Interns work 37.5 hours per week, Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m; they are paid $15 per hour on a bi-weekly basis, with shared intern housing and a public transit commuter pass included.
