Circulation Technician (Part Time), Lynnfield Public Library, Lynnfield, MA

Description:

Serves as a library technician in the Circulation Department. Provides a wide variety of
basic library services using an automated library circulation system, requiring some
substantive knowledge of the library’s collections, services, systems, policies and
procedures.

Reports to Library Director but works under the general supervision of the Head of
Circulation who assigns work, outlines work procedures, and provides training and
technical guidance as necessary. Duties are generally performed on one’s own initiative in
accordance with established procedures, referring unusual problems to supervisor.

Though technicians do not directly supervise pages and volunteers, they may assign work,
outline procedures, and provide training and technical assistance as necessary and in the
absence of the Head of Circulation.

Schedule:

Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 9am – 1pm and one Saturday per four-week
rotation.

Salary:

$16.70 – $19.03/hour. 8 hrs per week. Union Position.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides high level of customer service to patrons of all ages in person, over the telephone, and via email.
  • Performs circulation desk procedures, including, but not limited to, checking in and checking out of materials, registering new patrons, updating patron accounts, and collecting Library fines and payments for copies.
  • Assists patrons in using photocopiers, online registration systems, and finding and retrieving materials within the Library building (this includes adult, young adult, and children’s materials).
  • Upholds patron privacy laws and confidentiality policies.
  • Answers informational questions and refers more complex questions to appropriate departments.
  • Maintains tidiness and organization at Circulation Desk and Office, and assists in keeping informational materials for patrons up-to-date and neat. Sorts and routes mail.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Graduation from college or the equivalent academic and/or professional experience.
Upon hiring, applicants must be able to work a minimum of eight (8) hours per week as
described below. In addition, this employee will join our Saturday rotation, working a half
day one Saturday per four-week rotation, and may have one evening shift until 9 pm.

Some knowledge of library principles, methods, materials, and practices; Ability to tactfully
and courteously interact with the general public; Excellent customer service skills; Ability
to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers; Attention to
detail; Ability to follow written and oral instructions. Ability to communicate professionally.
