Open Educational Resources and Technology Librarian, Salem State University, Salem, MA

Reporting to the Chair of the Library Program Area, the Open Educational Resources and
Technology Librarian works collaboratively with faculty across academic disciplines to
coordinate and support the adoption, adaptation, and creation of Open Educational
Resources (OER). The librarian also works closely with the Dean of the Library on the
administration of the University’s exemplar OER and Textbook Affordability Initiative. The
librarian is also responsible for supporting student success through the development,
management, and instructional design of technologies that improve the accessibility and
user experience of the library’s online presence, including online learning. The librarian
participates in general library instruction, research assistance, assessment activities,
strategic planning, and other library and campus initiatives. This is a full-time tenure track
position.
Salem State University is located in Salem, Massachusetts, about 15 miles north of Boston.
Salem is a bustling coastal city with a rich history (Salem Witch Trials, maritime trading
hub, Nathaniel Hawthorne birthplace) and a vibrant downtown scene with dozens of
restaurants, shops, museums, and historic buildings.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides specialized assistance and collaborative support for faculty on the use, adoption, adaption, creation, and publication of Open Educational Resources (OERs)
  • Identifies courses and programs for OER adoption and work with other librarians to identify and promote subject-specific OER content in all academic departments
  • Designs and delivers workshops and instruction sessions to faculty and others on open educational resources and pedagogical practices
  • Assists the Dean with the management and activities of the Viking OER and Textbook Affordability Initiative
  • Advises faculty and other librarians on copyright best practices, creative commons licenses, and fair use
  • Writes and creates web content that supports all aspects of the library’s webpresence; serves as back-up for the library’s primary website administrator
  • Conducts focus groups and other assessment methods to improve user experience, accessibility, and usability of digital resources
  • Stays current on trends, best practices, legislation, and scholarship about open education
  • Participates in general research and instruction services; delivers and tracks research help services via consultation appointments (both in-person and virtually), email, and chat
  • Engages in professional development and continuing scholarship, such as participation in or contributions to professional societies and organizations or research as demonstrated by published or unpublished work

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s of library & information science or equivalent from an ALA-accredited program at the time of hire
  • Experience teaching and advising on the discovery and use of open educational resources
  • Experience teaching and advising on copyright, open licensing, and fair use
  • Experience teaching information literacy (classes, workshops, one-on-one)
  • Experience providing research help using a wide variety of general online research databases, library-specific software (such as LibGuides), instructional technologies, and virtual reference services
  • Experience providing outreach services in libraries
