Imaging Technician Internship, Phillips Library of the Peabody Essex Museum, MA

Description:

This intern will allow the library to make considerable progress on reimaging, to current standards, the witchcraft trial documents on deposit from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The images will then be shared with the public via our new digital content platform, Quartex.

Join the Phillips Library, PEM’s research library, as a digital project intern! Our digitization program increases free, worldwide access to our collections and demonstrates that the library is a vital and engaged part of the museum and its communities. This project will focus on digitizing the Massachusetts Court of Oyer and Terminer records, a large collection of original legal documents pertaining to the Salem Witchcraft Trials, on deposit from the Supreme Judicial Court. It will include imaging and post-processing of the collection in Capture One and Photoshop, and creation of metadata in Dublin Core for entry into our new online collections portal, which will soon be available online. Transcriptions may also be added if time allows. In addition to time spent on the main project, the intern will have time to shadow other library units and staff. We will provide a broad view of the entire library operation, and encourage interns to participate in meetings, small projects, outings, and other opportunities as they arise. A $1000 stipend is provided.

Internship Qualifications: Interest in library services or a related field. Competence with Microsoft Office and Google suites. Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational and interpersonal skills. The intern will receive training in library/museum systems and equipment used for the project (Aeon, Quartex, NetX, CaptureOne, DT Versa copy stand). Please note that this position is in Rowley, MA and reliable transportation is required.
