Research and Teaching Librarian, University of New England, Portland, ME

Responsibilities:               

  • Cultivate and sustain collaborative relationships with faculty, students and staff in support of teaching, learning and research.
  • Work with faculty to assess student needs and integrate library research into the curricula.
  • Plan, implement and evaluate information literacy instruction for students; be adept at teaching evidence-based practice skills to health professions students.
  • Use current and emerging technologies to support and enhance teaching and research experiences and user access to Library resources, and use of evidence-based literature.
  • Develop educational tools such as instructional documents, video tutorials, learning modules, relevant subject research guides, and web sites to support research and teaching.
  • Maintain extensive subject knowledge in medical, dental, nursing, and allied health sciences subject areas. Maintain subject knowledge in biological and environmental sciences, arts and humanities, and social sciences.
  • Address information needs of diverse users including interview, needs assessment, and interpretation of information requests. Develop strategies and answer requests directly, or by teaching users sufficient skills to do so independently.
  • Maintain expert knowledge and skill in using and teaching online databases and resources, especially biomedical sources including PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane, Scopus, and others.
  • Maintain familiarity with the UNE Libraries collections and assist in development and evaluation of collections including budget recommendations related to cost-per-use data.
  • Collect and manage data related to user instruction and other areas for assessment and reporting.
  • Identify, evaluate and select new materials and services in subject specialty areas and for Library collections.
  • Provide support and collaborate on research projects, publications, data management, and other research needs.
  • Adapt to cyclical periods of intense work activity, prioritize and manage multiple concurrent tasks.
  • Assist with general library operations and be cross-trained in specific areas.
  • Collaborate and communicate regularly with other Library staff via functional and cross-functional teams, sharing leadership responsibilities.
  • Collaborate with UNE faculty, staff and students to plan, coordinate and evaluate services, exchange information, and resolve problems.
  • Keep abreast of new developments and best practices in academic librarianship through professional development activities.
  • Participate in campus-wide projects and represent the library on University committees.
  • Provide exceptional customer service.
  • Serve as library liaison to designated units within the University.
  • Commit to actively fostering a welcoming culture of inclusion and diversity.
  • Travel between campuses as needed.
  • Complete University new employee orientation and sexual harassment training within 30 days of the date of hire.
  • Understand and comply with UNE Safety Manual.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications    

Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program.

  • Current and broad base of skills and technical knowledge related to reference and research in an academic library.
  • Experience in use of academic library information sources.
  • Experience and proficiency using technology to deliver information and perform outreach.
  • Demonstrated teaching, training and assessment experience with a focus on information literacy skills, or comparable experience in teaching and program planning.
  • Strong presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of or experience with evidence-based practice, research data management, tools for demonstrating research impact, and relevant research and publishing processes.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends as required.
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems and exercise judgement in resolving or referring special or non-routine situations.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team-based management structure, initiate ideas and share information and knowledge to work productively with Library staff.
  • Ability to work independently, plan, organize, prioritize, and complete projects by target dates.
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with a diverse academic community.
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing exceptional customer service.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a high degree of computer literacy.
  • Flexibility and ability to adapt to cyclical periods of intense work activity, prioritize and manage multiple concurrent tasks.
  • Knowledge of the principles, organization and philosophy of an academic library.
  • Willingness and ability to travel between campuses.
