Job Goal
Provide leadership and expertise necessary to establish that a library media program is an integral part of the instructional program of the elementary schools.

The Library Media Specialist assumes all responsibilities related to the effective operation and evaluation of the elementary schools’ library programs.

Job Responsibilities

  • Directs, organizes, and supervises the personnel and services essential to a library media program centered on students’ needs and the instructional goals of the schools.
  • Develops and maintains a long-range plan for library media instruction and services and collaborates with classroom teachers to develop specific subject-area projects that integrate information literacy skills and technology literacy standards with the elementary school curriculum.
  • Evaluates the collection of each library, then establishes a collection development plan and annual budget that will ensure that the collections support the schools’ curricula and encourage student recreational reading.
  • Works with the Director of Personalized Learning & Instructional Technology and other School Library Media Specialist(s) to develop and implement a sequential program of information and technology literacy skills that teaches students to conduct research and prepare research papers in accordance with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.
  • Develops and implements programs that encourage recreational reading.
  • Acts as a consultant to teachers and staff on matters dealing with information and technology literacy and advises them on techniques and resources to enhance classroom instruction.
  • Educates the staff about the role and importance of the Library Media Program and does whatever is necessary to embed the effective use of the Library Media Center in the elementary schools.
  • Keeps the principals, and Director of Personalized Learning & Instructional Technology informed of issues, needs and the operation of the elementary schools’ Library Media Program.
  • Any other general duties as determined by the Superintendent of Schools, Assistant Superintendent or Teaching and Learning, and Director of Personalized Learning & Instructional Technology
  • Requirements
    • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
    • A Masters degree in Library Science from an accredited college or university, with a preference given to those accredited by the American Library Association.
    • Certification valid for service as a Library Media Specialist in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Preference will be given to candidates who, along with valid certification as a Library Media Specialist, also have technology experience/courses in their background.
    • At least five years in education preferred, three years of which will be as a Library Media Specialist in a public school setting.

Educational Leadership

  1. Keeps abreast and informed of new and emerging technologies and their potential impact on successful instruction and learning, providing systematic whole group, small group, and one-on-one instruction to teachers and staff on their use.
  2. Encourages and stimulates the search for effective and innovative methods of instruction.
  3. Works closely with teachers and principals to plan for staff and curriculum development to meet specific building and district-wide goals/needs.

Standards for All Teachers
Plans Curriculum and Instruction:

  • Draws on content standards of the relevant curriculum frameworks to plan sequential units of study, individual lessons, and learning activities that make learning cumulative and advance students’ level of content knowledge.
  • Draws on results of formal and informal assessments as well as knowledge of human development to identify teaching strategies and learning activities appropriate to the specific discipline, age, level of English language proficiency, and range of cognitive level being taught.
  • Identifies appropriate reading materials, other resources, and writing activities for promoting further learning by the full range of students within the classroom.
  • Identifies prerequisite skills, concepts, and vocabulary needed for the learning activities.
  • Plans lessons with clear objectives and relevant measurable outcomes.
  • Draws on resources from colleagues, families, and the community to enhance learning.
  • Incorporates appropriate technology and media in lesson planning.
  • Uses information in Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) to plan strategies for integrating students with disabilities into general education classrooms,
  • Uses instructional planning, materials, and student engagement approaches that support students of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, strengths, and challenges.

Reports to: Building Principals

Works with: School Principals, Elementary Classroom Teachers, Paraprofessionals, and Volunteer Library Coordinators

Salary: Per Teacher’s Contract
