Library Instruction Specialist/Senior Assistant Librarian, California State University San Bernardino, San Bernardino, CA

We are seeking a qualified, service-oriented, innovative, and collaborative colleague to join us and fill this vital role.  The Library Instruction Specialist is a full-time, tenure-track position with the rank of Senior Assistant Librarian that reports to the library’s dean as do all CSUSB library faculty.

The successful candidate will be the  point person for our already existing, full-featured instruction program, a foundation upon which you will build in collaboration with the team of librarians who provide instruction.

Monitor current trends in academic library instruction and information literacy and make recommendations to the team for moving our instruction program forward with refinements or new approaches to existing instruction services, as well as recommendations for devising, planning, and implementing new ones.

Primary responsibility for organizing and scheduling library instruction on our main campus.  Support library instruction at our satellite campus in Palm Desert as needed.

Participate in reference service, collection development, and liaison duties. 

The successful candidate will be expected to meet retention, promotion, and tenure (RPT) standards for tenure-track library faculty in three areas: (1) professional assignment; (2) research, scholarly, or creative contributions; and, (3) university and/or community service.  The library provides support for and fosters intellectual endeavors.  Librarians are valued as faculty with their own varied research interests which may not be limited to library science.

Applicants selected for in-person interviews will be reimbursed for any travel expenses they incur.  Should the successful candidate need to relocate, moving expenses will be reimbursed.

TYPICAL ACTIVITIES

Receives CSUSB faculty requests for various forms of library instruction and schedules them.  Assigns librarians to fulfill requests, taking care to spread the assignments equally among them.

Coordinates with the Office of Undergraduate Studies’ Student Mentoring Program to train students as Library Ambassadors, for our popular peer-to-peer library instruction group.  Library Ambassadors visit targeted first-year courses in the General Education program that have a critical information literacy learning outcome.  Schedules these students to fill faculty requests.

Serves as the library representative to the Teaching Academy and other campus entities related to instruction.

Stays up to date with current trends in library instruction and information literacy.

Monitors the physical condition of two classrooms in the library and the level of supplies.

Calls meetings to consult with colleagues on library instruction program issues, new initiatives, etc.

Promotes the library instruction program to the campus community.

Provides in-person reference service at the Research Assistance Desk and participates in online chat reference service.

Provides excellent library instruction via various in-person, online, synchronous, and asynchronous means.

Collects data and assesses effectiveness of library instruction program components.

Participates in collection development in assigned disciplines and serves as liaison to faculty in those disciplines.

Engages in activities related to retention, promotion, and tenure (RPT).

Qualified candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse student population and to working effectively with faculty, staff and students across a wide range of disciplines.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an American Library Association accredited program.
  • Coursework, robust knowledge of, and/or experience in library instruction and information literacy.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Commitment to excellence in teaching a diverse student population as well as working collegially with staff and faculty across a range of disciplines.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively.
  • Evidence of potential for a successful career in librarianship at an academic library that supports a diverse campus community.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with instruction and reference services in a diverse academic setting.
  • Experience with innovative online instructional tools and techniques and a passion for exploring emerging technologies to improve teaching and learning.
  • Knowledge of, or experience with, critical information literacy.
  • Familiarity with outcomes assessment in higher education.
