Melrose Civil War Veterans Heritage Project, City of Melrose, Melrose, MA

Description:

The City of Melrose, through the Office of Planning and Community Development (OPCD) and the Memorial Hall Board of Trustees and in consultation with the Melrose Historical Commission, is seeking quotes from a project archivist for the cataloging and curation of on-site historical ephemera, and the creation of a master interpretive plan to make the historical resources of the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building more accessible to the citizens of and visitors to the City. Owned by the City and recognized in the National Register of Historic Places, this site serves as a vibrant community event space and as the City’s foremost shrine to the service of our veterans

The successful respondent will archive, investigate, and interpret the documents, photographs, paintings, and other memorabilia currently housed in Memorial Hall. The respondent will also explore the criteria and methodology historically used for memorializing Civil War and other notable Melrose veterans to help determine whether there are other veterans who could be recognized at Memorial Hall but are not currently. The respondent will also assist with crafting a collection policy for future donations to the Memorial Hall Collection and will help identify methods to safely organize existing material for proper storage. The City has received funding from the State Historical Records Advisory Board and secured financial support from the Memorial Hall Board of Trustees. Work is expected to begin August 2022 and conclude in May 2023.
