Wartburg College invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the Robert and Sally Vogel Library and College Librarian. The College seeks an energetic, creative leader with a passion for service and a clear vision of the library’s central role in promoting teaching, learning, and scholarship at a selective liberal arts college. The successful candidate will enthusiastically embrace the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues to envision and develop a comprehensive student support center.

The Vogel Library, designed as a state-of-the-art learner’s library for the 21” century, has seen significant updates since its renovation in 1999. It contains two active learning classrooms, the Creation Studio, and a wide variety of spaces and technology to support student learning. Librarians and library staff work in partnership with faculty and students to meet general education and broadly envisioned curricular requirements to create an integrated learning environment for the college community. The library is home to the Wartburg Archives, which contains the College Archives and the Archives of Iowa Broadcasting. Located centrally on campus, the Vogel Library enjoys active use of its spaces, services, and resources.


Responsibilities:
• Supports the Mission of the College and contributes to achieving the learning outcomes of the College;
• Provides leadership and support for all library operations including budget, library personnel, collection development, instruction, technology, public services, archives, and facilities;
• Articulates and inspires Information Literacy learning at Wartburg College through partnership with faculty, programs, and departments collaborating with Vogel Library librarians and staff.
• Collaborates with stakeholders, disciplines, and programs to provide a learning environment and appropriate resources to encourage student engagement in all aspects of inquiry, problem solving, and critical thinking;
• Contributes to outreach through the Library’s national advisory board and the Archives of Iowa Broadcasting national advisory board;
• Serves on college committees for academic policy and governance as elected or appointed;

The Director and College Librarian leads a staff of 4 professional, 4 support staff, and over 250 hours per week of student assistants. Vogel Library’s collections include more than 240,000 items, with access to a wide array of print and non-print materials, electronic books, journals, newspapers, electronic publications, and online databases. The Vogel Library building houses, in addition to library functions, the Academic Resource Center, Counseling Services, the Konditorei (café) and a planned renovation will bring the Student Life division into the building. The library also collaborates with Information Technology

Supervision:
The Director of the Vogel Library and College Librarian holds a non-tenurable faculty position and reports to the Vice-President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty.

Wartburg College offers a salary commensurate with responsibility and experience and an excellent benefits package. Anticipated starting date is negotiable.


Qualifications:
Required:
• ALA-accredited graduate degree
• Supervisory experience in a library setting
• An understanding of the library’s role in achieving the mission of Wartburg College
• Demonstrated administrative and management experience in academic libraries including leadership, budgeting, collection development, resource sharing, and personnel
• Ability to provide leadership in assessment, planning, and implementation of library services, programs, and technology in consultation with faculty, staff, administrators, students, and alumni
• Successful experience teaching information literacy and providing leadership in innovative teaching and learning in collaboration with faculty
• A record of service to the profession and evidence of ongoing scholarly achievement
• Knowledge of current issues and trends in scholarly communication, pedagogy, and librarianship such as copyright, plagiarism, intellectual freedom, technology, and assessment
• Ability to work successfully within a collaborative and collegial environment to provide professional development for library staff
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Demonstrated commitment to supporting diverse student populations and students with diverse needs

Preferred:
• Doctorate degree in a relevant discipline
