Public Services Librarian (part-time), Newton Free Library, Newton, MA

Description:

The Newton Free Library is the busiest single location library in the state, charting over 1.6 million circulations last year.  According to our door counts nearly 660,000 people visited the library last year for materials borrowing, research assistance, study space, meetings and programs.  Our goal is to provide the best customer experience possible for each of these visitors. The Public Services Department is seeking a like-minded and motivated colleague to join our team in assisting patrons with their varied information needs. Successful candidates will be ready to:

  • answer Reference questions in person, on the telephone, via email and in real time;
  • enthusiastically instruct patrons in the use of all library resources and provide readers advisory services;
  • participate in department activities including class instruction and programming while keeping current with developing technologies as they relate to reference and public service;
  • teach tech classes in topics such as smartphones, tablets, Zoom, etc.
  • be a team player who is ready to assist their colleagues on special projects and other duties as necessary.

Hours: Alternating weekend hours; additional on-call weekday, evening and weekend hours.

Qualifications: M.L.S. from an accredited library school, proficiency in automated systems, (or major progress towards this degree), database and Internet searching and MS Office products. Familiar with personal technology, social media and developing technology. Strong customer service skills; reference experience; demonstrated ability to work successfully in a team setting; work positively with a diverse constituency and willingness to work on-call hours.

Salary: Monday- Saturday: $25.87/hour; Sundays time and a half
