Digital Photographer, Historic New England, Haverhill, MA

Historic New England seeks a full-time digital photographer to work on the Collections Team. The digital photographer photographs library, archival, and artifact collections for inclusion in the ResourceSpace digital asset management system and for special projects such as grant-funded initiatives and website development.

Classification: Full time; non-exempt

Location: Haverhill, Massachusetts; Regular regional travel required; New England residency required

Key Roles and Responsibilities: The Digital Photographer is responsible for the following primary functions and other duties as assigned:

  • Works with various staff to ensure that all projects are completed on time and within budget at the Haverhill and Boston studios
  • Under the supervision of the archives manager, photographs objects in the library and archival collections, including photographs, architectural renderings, prints and engravings, art work, ephemera, and books for ingestion into the digital asset management system
  • Compares digital images to original objects and makes necessary tonal and color adjustments
  • Following Historic New England guidelines and standards, embeds metadata for all of the digital files created
  • Uses knowledge of color management best practices to calibrate studio computer monitors, maintain accurate equipment setup and inventory, and make necessary adjustments to workflow to respond to equipment and software changes
  • Undertakes digital photography as needed and as part of special projects, including grant-funded projects and web applications
  • Photographs people, places, and objects for Historic New England Magazine and other publications and projects as assigned, including print-on-demand publications, website development, and exhibitions photography
  • Maintains the equipment inventory, troubleshoots technical issues with IT, performs digital file maintenance, and coordinates repair of equipment in both studios and works with the collection technician to define and plan for long-term needs of the Haverhill studio.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in photography, studio art, museum studies or library science, and three years of relevant professional experience; or an Associate’s degree and five years of relevant professional experience. Equivalent relevant professional training may be considered in place of education
  • Experience with digital SLRs, including tethered capture, studio photography and lighting with a focus on color accuracy and reflection management, Macintosh and PC computers, data entry and digital imaging software
  • Full competency in computer applications, including Microsoft™ and digital imaging applications, including Phase One Capture One and Adobe™ Photoshop
  • Ability to operate effectively in a team environment, where oral and written communication within and among teams is essential to success
  • Excellent problem solving skills, with the ability to effectively plan and implement work processes to meet daily, weekly, and monthly deadlines
  • Experience photographing people, objects, and buildings on location
  • Requires a valid driver’s license and means of transportation
  • Verification of full COVID-19 vaccination status or exemption approved by Historic New England prior to the start date of employment

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Matterport virtual tour cameras and software, museum and archives databases, and some familiarity with standard collections care and best practices for object handling
  • Familiarity with Adobe™ InDesign or other publishing software, experience with the photography of bound materials, and/or experience with preparing materials for print-on-demand publishing

Salary: $22.00-$23.00 hourly
