Technology/Reference Librarian, Medford Public Library, Medford, MA

HOURS OF WORK: Full-time (35 hours), including some Saturdays and evening hours.

SALARY: L-4(M) – $978.30.00 – $1,1190.05 weekly.


BASIC FUNCTION:
Maintains all public and staff computers, networks and other technology for the library. Provides technical support and training to both staff and patrons of the Medford Public Library.
SUPERVISION: Works under the direction of Director of Library.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Updates and maintains all library computer software and hardware.
• Serves as local area network manager.
• Develops and a plans for Library’s current and future technological needs.
• Staffs the Reference and Information desk as necessary to meet scheduling demands.
• Serves as tech liaison to the Minuteman Library Network and Tech Support Services.
• Maintains a working knowledge of contemporary issues, trends and technology in Library profession.
• Responsible for on going computer training of staff as well as public on and offsite.
• Provides support for public computers and other peripheral equipment, troubleshoots and solves software and hardware problems.
• Troubleshoots and solves software and hardware problems on staff computers.
• Serves as local area network manager.
• Serves as the technology liaison to the Minuteman Library Network, attends network Key User meetings, keeps staff and administration updated on network developments and issues.
• Maintains and troubleshoots key card reader system.
• Maintains and troubleshoots Library’s telephone system.
• Evaluates and maintains library software and hardware and all related items.
• Makes recommendations for purchase of software and hardware and related items.
• Installs software and new equipment.
• Installs updates on all library computers.
• Keeps track of software licenses and documentation.
• Repairs equipment when possible, installs cabling when necessary.

• Maintains security on all public and staff computers.
• Trains staff and administration on new technology, creates training guides for staff.
• Monitors the technology budget, along with Library Director, advises on device purchases and long-range budget planning.
• Assists with technology planning for the library.
• Assists with maintenance and development of library website.
• Develops and implements new services, seeks out new resources, programs and equipment for use at library.
• Creates and implements new technology polices and procedures.
• Provides workshops and training in the Tech Lab and assists with Tech Lab program and planning.


Reference Desk work includes:
o Greeting patrons as they enter the Reference Department;
o Assists patrons with reference and research inquires;
o Assists patrons with public access to computers and other equipment use;
o Assists patrons with locating materials;
o Assists patrons with local history research;
o Assists patrons with electronic resources, streaming platforms and devices;
o Assists patrons with holds and interlibrary loans;
o Provides information about library and network policies and procedures;
o Takes part in all programs and procedures assigned to the Reference Department.
• Attends network meetings and professional conferences.
• Opens and closes the building when necessary.
• Other duties as assigned.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Master of Library Science degree from an ALA accredited college or university. A strong background in computers/technology required. Applicants must have prior experience working in a Library setting.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
Knowledge – Basic knowledge of library operations, networks and technology used in library settings.
Skills – Strong communication skills both orally and in writing. Interpersonal skills to assist patrons with various library services and operations.
Abilities – Ability to communicate effectively and courteously. Ability to work well with a diverse general public. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
