Research & Instruction Librarian, New England Conservatory, Boston, MA

The Research & Instruction Librarian develops and delivers innovative outreach and effective
research and instruction support programs and services for the NEC community. This Librarian
provides course-integrated instruction in the identification and evaluation of information
resources; individual consultations on the design and pursuit of research strategies and the use
of research-related technologies; applies expertise to the selection of new library resources;
provides formal and informal programs to orient new faculty, staff and students to NEC-
supported information and technology services and resources; and provides operational
support for Library service locations. This Librarian partners throughout the library, and with
other campus departments to ensure the success of NEC’s teaching, learning, and performance
goals.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
● Prepare and deliver course-integrated instruction on identifying, retrieving, and
evaluating information resources in a variety of formats.
● Provide individual consultations on the design and pursuit of research strategies and the
use of research-related technologies. Answer reference inquiries.
● Apply expertise to evaluating, selecting, deploying, and supporting appropriate
information and research resources in support for the Conservatory’s needs.
● Create and maintain electronic content relating to research, instruction, and related
academic endeavors.
● Provide formal and informal programs to orient new faculty, staff and students to
college-supported information and technology services and resources.
● Establish and foster strong relationships with faculty and students to learn about and
engage with evolving approaches to research and teaching. Collaborate with colleagues
to align acquisition of library materials and resources, services, and programs with
current academic priorities.

● Stay abreast of NEC’s curriculum both current and proposed, and trends in tools and
initiatives that support the creative discovery and use of all forms of musical creation.
● Participate in and/or lead projects, cross-departmental initiatives, and the work of the
team.
● Occasional “off-hours” work may be required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
● Bachelor’s degree in a music-related field.
● 3 years of relevant experience or ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS and 1 year of relevant
experience.
● Broad knowledge of music literature, relevant access tools (in physical and electronic
formats), and issues related to intellectual property.
● Demonstrated professional skills in public services, library instruction, and answering
reference questions.
● Demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, students, library users, and library
colleagues in a diverse and changing working environment.
● Strong technology skills and an enthusiasm for adopting new technologies and systems
that help advance the mission of the library.
● High levels of courtesy, professionalism, and confidentiality.
● Proven written and verbal communication skills.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
● ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS and 3 years of relevant experience.
● Advanced degree in a music-related field.
● Demonstrated knowledge of traditional and emerging approaches to research and
teaching in music and related disciplines.
● Experience partnering with staff who support instructional technologies in pursuit of
faculty and student success.
● Experience incorporating archives and special collections into course-integrated
instruction.
