Assistant Librarian – Research & Instruction, Tufts University, Boston, MA

The Research & Instruction Department (R&I) of the Hirsh Health Sciences Library is responsible for providing and developing services to meet the information needs of the staff, students, and faculty of the Boston Health Sciences Campus. The campus is comprised of the Tufts University School of Medicine, the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, Public Health and Professional Degree Programs, the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging (HNRCA), and Tufts Medical Center. In addition, the Library serves the clinical faculty and students of affiliate teaching hospitals. The Department’s major activities are education, reference, online and print information delivery, circulation, and reserves.

The Research & Instruction Librarian is responsible for coordinating and providing specialized information services to students, researchers, and clinicians. This position reports to the Head of Research & Instruction and serves as the R&I team’s primary contact with Educational Technology Services, Library Technology Services, and other departments as needed to support the Library’s web presence and engagement with learners and users. This position will play a strong role in Research Data Management initiatives on the Health Sciences Campus and beyond, and will also provide subject specialty liaison support to various academic departments as assigned. The successful candidate will keep abreast of trends in technologies relevant to instruction, outreach, and data management, and will coordinate with other members of the Library staff to maintain the website, Research Guides, and library pages within the Canvas learning management system. As a member of the R&I team, this librarian will share in Library Service Desk duties, participate in group and individual instruction, serve on Tufts University library committees, and is expected to be professionally active.

Requirements:

  • Knowledge and skills as typically acquired by an MLS from an ALA-accredited institution
  • Demonstrated ability to search scientific literature databases (such as Medline, Web of Science, Embase)
  • Familiarity with web content management tools (Drupal preferred)
  • Familiarity with research data management principles and statistical software
  • Familiarity with learning management systems and instructional technology or design
  • Ability to work independently and in groups
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated teaching ability
  • Ability to communicate with diverse staff and user groups and at all levels of technical ability and scientific literacy
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite or comparable business and presentation tools

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching and working with statistical software and/or data visualization
  • Experience working in a medical or health sciences library
  • Undergraduate subject credentials in biology, chemistry, or health sciences
  • Undergraduate or graduate credentials in education
  • Familiar with common library technologies, such as chat reference and library resource guides
  • Strong commitment to outstanding public service, flexibility, initiative, creativity and enthusiasm for teaching and working collaboratively
  • Desire to learn user needs and recommend solutions to improve library service    

This position can accommodate some hybrid office/remote work dependent on team needs.
