The Patten Free Library, located in Bath, Maine, is a private non-profit library that serves the City of Bath and the Towns of Arrowsic, Georgetown, West Bath, and Woolwich. (Total population served is approximately 14,932.)

Job Summary:  This full time 35 hours per week position involves providing technology assistance, reference, and readers’ advisory services to patrons. Work may also involve collection development and programming assistance. Work is performed under the direct or indirect supervision of the Assistant Director. Related work as required.

Responsibilities: 

  • Provide print and electronic reference and information services to the public in person, via telephone and computer; provides readers’ advisory; provide and perform interlibrary loan functions.
  • Monitor public access computer use, and assist patrons with computer use, troubleshooting, printing, faxing, scanning and other copier services.
  • Assist and instruct patrons in the use of the electronic catalog and databases and eReaders. May assist with conducting training classes on specific resources or providing scheduled technology assistance with patrons.
  • May assist with assigned areas of collection development, weeding, and programming for adults and young adults.
  • Perform circulation functions as needed, including issuing library cards and staffing the circulation desk.
  • May assist other departments with special projects.
  • Keep informed of professional development opportunities, and attends professional meetings and workshops.
  • Participate in the federal and state tax forms distribution.
  • Participate in the planning and delivery of the Library’s summer reading program services.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Performance knowledge, skills, abilities and personal characteristics:

  • Good knowledge of modern principles and practices of library services.
  • Good knowledge of library materials and techniques used in public service departments.
  • Knowledge of library methods and procedures; cataloging skills a plus.
  • Ability to comprehend users’ needs quickly and accurately.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to use interpersonal skills effectively with staff and patrons.                       

·        Tact; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position: standing, bending, retrieving library materials from the shelves.

Qualifications:  A Master’s Degree in Library or Information Sciences

Conditions of Employment:  May requiresome evening and weekend hours as a substitute.

Hourly Rate: $18 to $20 depending on experience.
