The University of Southern Maine welcomes applications for the position of Dean of Libraries and Learning, a newly defined role resulting from an upcoming retirement. The Dean is the executive officer of the University Libraries and leader of a new, innovative division that provides academic support to all university constituents (students, faculty, staff, and community members). 

The Dean will be an experienced leader who understands the evolving role of academic libraries and student support services, while building strong collaborations with the university community and the University of Maine System.  Reporting directly to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean of Libraries & Learning will provide innovative and creative leadership to fulfill the vision of the library as a learning commons and center of academic support for a comprehensive university in the 21st century. 

The Dean is responsible for the leadership, administration, organization, operation, and evaluation of library services, facilities, staff, collections, digital presence, and budgets. In concert with faculty, staff, and students, the Dean promotes a shared vision of how Libraries and Learning serve the academic community and support our students. The Dean works with the other campus leadership to ensure success and partners and collaborates with other academic and faculty support areas.

The Dean is the executive officer of the University Libraries which includes three University Libraries and two Special Collections.  Also reporting to the Dean are the Director of Academic Retention Initiatives and Learning Support, and the Director of the Maker Innovation Studio (MIST).  The Director of the Center for Collaboration and Development (CCD) and the Director of the future Writing Center report in part to the Dean as well.

As a leader, manager, and supervisor within a complex organization, the Dean is responsible for building a Library and Learning team which is committed to university goals. To this end, the Dean actively promotes collaborative approaches to decision-making, implementation, and partnerships. The Dean promotes and supports the university’s goals of student success, community engagement, and fiscal sustainability. 

This position will pay an annual salary up to $150,000 commensurate with experience.  

This position’s office is located on the Portland Campus with the expectation of serving the Gorham and Lewiston-Auburn campuses.

Required Qualifications: 

  • An ALA-accredited Master’s degree in library and information science (MLIS), or a Ph.D. and relevant library and leadership experience. 
  • Significant experience (typically 7 years or more) in an administrative leadership position at a college or university
  • A record of collaborative leadership in a complex organization.
  • Demonstrated experience with Libraries, their operations, technologies, and online systems and services.
  • Demonstrated professional commitment to and experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion within both library and university settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with staff, faculty, students, administrators, community partners, and professional organizations.
