Phillips Library – Imaging Technician Intern

This intern will allow the library to make considerable progress on reimaging, to current standards, the witchcraft trial documents on deposit from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The images will then be shared with the public via our new digital content platform, Quartex.

Join the Phillips Library, PEM’s research library, as a digital project intern! Our digitization program increases free, worldwide access to our collections and demonstrates that the library is a vital and engaged part of the museum and its communities. This project will focus on digitizing the Massachusetts Court of Oyer and Terminer records, a large collection of original legal documents pertaining to the Salem Witchcraft Trials, on deposit from the Supreme Judicial Court. It will include imaging and post-processing of the collection in Capture One and Photoshop, and creation of metadata in Dublin Core for entry into our new online collections portal, which will soon be available online. Transcriptions may also be added if time allows. In addition to time spent on the main project, the intern will have time to shadow other library units and staff. We will provide a broad view of the entire library operation, and encourage interns to participate in meetings, small projects, outings, and other opportunities as they arise.

Internship Qualifications: Interest in library services or a related field. Competence with Microsoft Office and Google suites. Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational and interpersonal skills. The intern will receive training in library/museum systems and equipment used for the project (Aeon, Quartex, NetX, CaptureOne, DT Versa copy stand). Phillips Library – Digital Collections Metadata Intern

Join the Phillips Library, PEM’s research library, as a digital projects intern! Our digitization program exponentially increases free, worldwide access to our collections and demonstrates that the library is a vital and engaged part of the museum and its communities. This project will include research into provenance and copyright status of our various print and photographic collections in preparation for digitization. Incumbent will create appropriate metadata in Dublin Core, in preparation for the collections to be transferred to our digitization partners, Internet Archive and Digital Commonwealth. Building collection descriptions and social media content may be part of this internship. In addition to time spent on the main project, the intern will have dedicated time to shadow other library units and staff. We will provide a broad view of the entire library operation, and encourage interns to participate in meetings, small projects, outings, and other opportunities as they arise during their time with us.
