Custom Researcher Business Information (Library & Information Science), Vertex, Boston, MA

The Library & Information Sciences Manager supports Vertex’s global mission by providing best-in-class management and utilization of external information resources. The incumbent’s primary role will be in performing custom research services in the areas of business, competitive, and industry intelligence. Additionally, the incumbent will play a key role in the department’s marketing and training efforts and will use their resource expertise to conduct ongoing technology and platform evaluations. This role will also work closely with cross-functional stakeholders to establish current awareness solutions through the use of searching and alerting strategies, utilizing a suite of expert resources.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead Custom Research capabilities in business and competitor intelligence subject areas. This research will support and enable project work and business initiatives throughout the organization by utilizing a variety of specialized resources focused on market, industry, clinical trial, regulatory, and drug project development intelligence.
  • Compile and synthesize research findings into actionable and intuitive reports that directly support critical business and research needs, driving decision making.
  • Understand user information needs and translate these into effective search strategies using a variety of specialized       resources such as GlobalData, Citeline, PubMed, Cortellis, and other business information tools. Evaluate, analyze, synthesize and deliver research results effectively.
  • Support our expert biomedical literature searcher in delivering targeted scientific intelligence.
  • Actively track and monitor business trends and developments, scientific, and legal news in the company’s core practice areas.
  • Establish and maintain effective tracking strategies and systems for conducting business intelligence searches to support marketing and business development.
  • Enhance and maintain our custom current awareness initiatives through stakeholder engagement, search strategy development, and evaluation of new technologies.
  • Proactively engage with teams and stakeholders across multiple business areas to understand research needs and develop actionable and sustainable solutions.
  • Consult with stakeholders throughout the organization on effective search strategies and technologies to support current awareness and alerting capabilities.
  • Collaborate with Library team to drive internal outreach and marketing initiatives, expanding awareness and increasing impact throughout the organization.
  • Engage stakeholders across the company to understand their custom research needs, and develop actionable and sustainable solutions.
  • Conduct focused trainings for teams and individuals on research tools, methodologies, and best practices.
  • Lead business information subject matter expertise to support the Library team’s goal of maintaining best-in-class external resources, through regular analysis and evaluation of new and existing information resources.
  • Communication skills that enable meeting our users at their level, embracing active listening, and prioritizing clear and impactful sharing of information.
  • Excellent ability to explain and quickly distill complex information, draw out the key points and make clear, tangible recommendations based on assimilation and analysis, and to build a consensus to enable action.
  • Proven ability to write concise, engaging reports, briefings, and other content for a range of audiences, often at short notice and with a sharp eye for detail and accuracy.
  • Confidence in presenting to groups of all sizes and knowledge levels, both in person and virtually.
  • Proactive and willing to work both independently and as part of a team.

Required Education Level

• Bachelors in Science or Bachelors in Arts degree

Required Experience

• Typically requires 5 years of experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Knowledge/Skills

  • Proven ability to thrive in a dynamic, time-sensitive, fast-paced environment, with a strong commitment to teamwork and customer service.
  • Prioritization of user experience, delivering high-quality research outputs emphasizing usability and streamlined processes.
  • Ability to perform a variety of tasks within a team environment, relying on experience and independent judgment to plan, prioritize, and accomplish goals.

  • Experience and ability to perform business, industry, regulatory, and general research using a variety of specialized digital tools.
  • Substantial experience of building effective working relationships with colleagues, researchers, and other stakeholders, with an understanding of when and how to involve them.
  • Knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Office, SharePoint, and Microsoft Teams.

Other Requirements

  • Relevant experience of working in biopharma, science, health, or related sectors.
  • Broad knowledge of health and science information resources (peer-reviewed literature, conferences, regulatory arena, government agencies, and document repositories).
