The City of Newburyport is seeking an energetic and visionary Head Librarian (Director) to sustain the Newburyport Public Library’s vital role in the community. Located in northeast Massachusetts, Newburyport is a seaside city with a population of 18,289, and a strong historic, artistic and cultural communities. As a member of the Merrimack Library Consortium (MVLC), the Library had a total circulation of 272,375 and over 10,000 active borrowers in FY21.


Under the supervision of the Mayor, and in consultation with a 12-member appointed Board of Directors, the Head Librarian is responsible for the management of all library services and resources, including a staff of 18 full-time and 2 part-time employees, an operating budget of $1,445,978 and a 38,000 square foot historic building with a 2001 addition. The new Head Librarian will work with a capable and enthusiastic staff, dedicated and dynamic Friends of the Library organization and an active corps of volunteers to ensure the provision of high quality services to a library supportive public.


The ideal candidate will have a positive attitude, an innovative spirit, integrity, flexibility, a sense of humor, and a genuine interest in people. Excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills are essential as is the ability to foster a culture that strives for excellence and promotes positive change.
Applicants must possess a through knowledge of the principals and practices of public library administration, strategic planning, finance, technology trends, personnel administration, facility management, public relations and social media. Experience in a collective bargaining environment is a plus.
