The Shrewsbury Public Library is seeking to fill a full-time Paraprofessional position of Library Technologist. Under general direction of the Assistant Library Director, the Technology Specialist works in coordination with the Digital Services Librarian and is responsible for all aspects of library hardware, software, and technology systems. This is not a public service position but does provide support to public services.

Essential Job Functions
• The employee operates complex library technologies and equipment and manages complex information systems.
• Administers all library technology equipment and systems; including selecting, deploying, configuring, maintaining and troubleshooting all computers, digital projectors, cameras, printers, scanners, barcode readers, etc.
• Administers security software and systems on all public computers and manages network connectivity. Supervises the daily operation of the Library’s automated systems and workstations, remaining on call as needed. Maintains records of equipment inventory, maintenance and repairs.
• Regularly interacts with vendors regarding electronic resource trials, acquisitions, licensing, pricing, and technical issues and with database providers, publishers, consortium partners, publishers, and other personnel to resolve problems with accessing electronic resources.
• Regularly interacts with technology vendors, employees of other town departments, and consortium representatives to provide or obtain information and assistance, in person, by telephone or online.
• May also interact with library patrons. Employee has access to confidential staff and patron records.
• Provides support for office and publishing software; provides staff and patron support for a variety of hardware, software and web based applications and proprietary reference databases.
• Maintains Makerspace equipment and manages patron requests for 3D printed objects.
• Installs, maintains, configures, secures and troubleshoots multiple public usage Dell PCs, HP and Xerox Printers.
• Provides support for office and publishing software; provides staff and patron support for a variety of hardware, software and web based applications and proprietary reference databases.

• Supports Digital Services Librarian on ILS-related issues.
• Responds to questions from library patrons and staff with informed advice on technology issues.
• Attends informational and instructional meetings and workshops related to library operations; may participate in regional committees and task forces.
• Works with adult services team to plan long term goals and programs
• Responds to staff and public requests for support on meeting and event technology. Errors could result in delay or loss of service; monetary loss, damage to equipment, data loss, patron dissatisfaction or compromised patron safety.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree required.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill

Experience and skills in technology systems and equipment required.


Experience with PC, tablet and Wi-Fi Network (Aerohive) and LAN (Fortigate) maintenance and troubleshooting required.


Thorough knowledge of library technology systems and equipment. Experience with PC and LAN maintenance and troubleshooting; experience with web design and desktop publishing. Experience with basic library operations and reference services including e-books and other library downloadable content preferred; experience with the online library environment, specifically Evergreen ILS. Experience with basic network administration and network cabling. Knowledge of graphic design and desktop publishing applications. Skill in applying library research methods and practices; ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision. Must be able to work independently, prioritize, adapt quickly to changing environments, meet established deadlines and embrace changing technologies. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills required. Demonstrated commitment to excellence in public service and enthusiasm for working with people of all ages

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Work is performed under typical library conditions, where the noise level may be loud; the workload is subject to seasonal fluctuations which require advance planning. Working during non-business hours required at times for system maintenance and repair. Moderate physical effort is required to perform most duties. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, speak, hear, and use hands to operate equipment. Able to move and lift materials up to 50 pounds. Vision requirements include the ability to read routine documents and use a computer. May be required to stand for extended periods of time.


Compensation and Schedule
This is a Library Technologist position, with an hourly salary range of $25.25 – $26.25 and includes benefits. This full-time 37.5 hour position has a work schedule during the hours of 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on weekdays.
