Youth Services Assistant, Merrimac Public Library, Merrimac, MA

Description:

The Merrimac Public Library serves a small community of 7000 residents. The town is supportive of the library, and the staff works well as a team to provide friendly public service. The Youth Services Assistant will work under the direction of the Youth Services Librarian, collaboratively as well as independently. The responsibilities of the position include all aspects necessary to serve youth, ages infants through teens.  

Responsibilities:.

  • Plan, prepare, promote and implement storytimes, events, and a Summer Reading Program.  
  • Collection development and maintenance for selected areas of the children’s collection, including materials selection, cataloging, processing, weeding, and shelving.
  • Create advertising for children’s programs including flyers, posters, etc.
  • Utilize social media to advertise library offerings and online software for event registration.
  • Provide reader’s advisory, place requests, and assist patrons with online resources and eBooks.  
  • Participate in circulation tasks as needed.
  • Keep abreast of current trends, new authors and materials, emerging technologies and topics in children’s literature.
  • Troubleshoot basic computer, printer and technology issues.
  • Perform similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates.

Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree plus experience working with children in a position of responsibility, preferably experience in a public library setting, or any combination of education and experience.
  • Strong technology skills are essential. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. 
  • Ability to adapt quickly and easily to changes in technology, the work environment, and the needs of the community.
