End Processing Assistant (Temp), Harvard University/Widener Library, Cambridge, MA

Under the direction of the Access Services Manager, the End Processing Assistant is required to perform shelf preparation and quality control on incoming material for stacks shelving or remote storage. The End Processing Assistant also receives, sorts, and prioritizes new material, formats, prints, applies call number tags, edge stamps, security strips and performs preservation review and tracks material in library system.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepares library materials for shelving in open stacks and the Harvard Depository following established guidelines and procedures:  sorts incoming materials from various ITS units for treatment; uses an automated label system to scan, edit, and print out call number labels; applies call number labels to the spines of volumes; adheres security devices; and applies ownership stamps.
  • Performs quality control and preservation review on shelf-ready material with high degree of accuracy.
  • Uses library system to ensure rigorous tracking of library materials. 
  • Packs material onto book trucks or into bins for transfer to library stacks or depository.
  • Demonstrates an attitude of respect and inclusion toward all staff.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Windows operating system and Windows software
  • Competency in keyboarding required.
  • Good written English language communication skills required
  • Strong manual dexterity required.
  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.

Additional Requirements:

  • Library experience and interest in working with a wide variety of library materials preferred.
  • Familiarity with bibliographic records.
  • Ability to perform repetitive work accurately with attention to detail for sustained periods in a high-volume, production-oriented environment.
  • Familiarity with Western European languages desirable
