The University Library at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the new position of Undergraduate Engagement Librarian. Under the direction of the Head of Research Support Services, the Undergraduate Engagement Librarian will lead University Library efforts to engage with undergraduates in a way that centers student voices and cultivates belonging. The Undergraduate Engagement Librarian will support university and library strategic priorities related to student success and equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI).

The University Library seeks a student-focused and creative individual to lead the library in envisioning how it holistically addresses what students need from the library during their first-year on campus and as they acculturate to academic life. The Undergraduate Engagement Librarian will (1) spearhead library-wide efforts to develop robust and creative approaches to onboarding first-year undergraduates and transfer students to the University Library and (2) ensure that the library is continuously and proactively listening to undergraduates and partnering with them to create welcoming, inclusive, student-focused spaces, collections, services, events, and policies.

The guiding vision for the work of this position will be shaped by campus needs as identified by the incumbent through their user research and direct engagement with students, student groups, and campus stakeholders. The University Library looks to this position to identify opportunities and approaches to meaningfully listen to and engage with students, including leading the library in re-establishing a student advisory group in a way that supports the University Library’s student success and EDI goals. The Undergraduate Engagement Librarian will have space to experiment, learn, and iterate as they develop inclusive approaches to student outreach, orientations, and engagement that center student needs and student voices and address barriers to student success.

The Undergraduate Engagement Librarian will be expected to collaborate with University Library colleagues and help elevate the student success and EDI work already underway throughout the library. As a member of the library’s Research Support Services Department, the incumbent will contribute to departmental services and projects and collaborate closely with the Online Learning Librarian, the User Experience Librarian, and the librarians who support disciplinary teaching and learning (i.e., upper division and graduate level). The Undergraduate Engagement Librarian will be expected to participate on relevant library project teams, UC system-wide committees, and professional organizations.

To be eligible for consideration, applicants must meet the qualifications outlined in the Basic Qualifications section below. In addition, applicants with any combination of the following qualifications or experience are encouraged to apply.

  • Experience teaching, supervising, and/or working with undergraduate students.
  • Knowledge of the ways that minoritized groups have been marginalized in higher education and strategies for creating inclusive and antiracist programs and environments.
  • Experience conducting research to better understand and identify user or student needs.
  • Experience communicating and engaging with stakeholders on behalf of a project, issue, or organization.
  • Experience providing public services and outreach to undergraduate students including underrepresented and marginalized populations.
  • Experience developing library orientation and/or outreach materials and programming.
  • Experience developing and assessing services to support or enhance student success.
  • Experience managing and leading projects or group projects.
  • Experience planning and presenting programs or events.

Basic qualifications:

 (required at time of application)An ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS degree (or equivalent foreign degree) completed by July 1, 2022 OR a Master’s degree (or equivalent foreign degree), OR a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent foreign degree) and a minimum of two years’ professional experience working in a library or other academic setting.Knowledge of the ways that minoritized groups have been marginalized in higher education and strategies for creating inclusive and antiracist programs and environments.Experience teaching, supervising, and/or working with undergraduate students.Experience managing/leading a project, group project, or program.

Job location

Santa Cruz, California. This position has the option to be an on-campus, hybrid, or full-time remote-work position; with occasional required travel to Santa Cruz.
