Library Technical Services Supervisor: The Springfield City Library seeks applicants for the Library Technical Services Supervisor position. This position is based at the Central Library, the heart of our busy library system. We seek candidates to work at our forward-looking, award-winning public library for this full-time, 37.5 hours/week job. The Library Technical Services Supervisor is responsible for assisting in the management of the Tech Services department. The supervisor oversees and performs various acquisitions, cataloging, and processing projects; and directs and coordinates the flow of materials through the department, and maintains the quality control of the online database/catalog. Work is performed with professional administrative judgment and decision in accordance with the policies and objectives of the Library Department, with review through reports to and meetings with the Manager of Technical Services and Collection Development. Supervision is exercised over all assigned personnel.

Essential functions:

  • Creates original catalog records or upgrades brief records in national database for export into local database, for all material formats and languages.
  • Uses or edits existing catalog records in local and national databases to perform copy cataloging for assigned material formats and languages.
  • Provides training, documentation, and ongoing consultation to all departmental staff, and volunteers as required. Troubleshoots various problems in acquisitions, cataloging, and processing.
  • Assigns and adjusts workloads for staff to enable steady workflow throughout the department, including projects outside normal work assignments.
  • Corrects errors in local databases found through special projects or referrals from other departments. Coordinates global database changes recommended to enhance customer service.
  • Coordinates scheduling orders of library materials through the acquisitions module of the ILS (currently Evergreen).
  • Maintains supplies for processing library materials and reorders supplies when needed.
  • Acts as liaison to staff in other departments and customer service representatives of library material vendors. Participates in continuing education and discussion groups organized by CWMARS, Massachusetts Library Association, and New England Library Association.
  • Confers with manager regarding matters of evaluation or discipline; defers matters of a serious personnel nature to manager.

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of original cataloging procedures.
  • Extensive knowledge of MARC format, Dewey Decimal Classification, Library of Congress Subject headings, AACR2, and RDA.
  • Ability to demonstrate vision, strategic thinking, collaboration and inclusive leadership skills, flexibility and adaptability and a willingness to embrace and drive change.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Creative problem solving skills.
  • Ability to recognize and set priorities and to use initiative and independent management decision-making.
  • Ability to coordinate, organize, direct, motivate, and evaluate public service staff.
  • Knowledge of and proven experience applying effective management practices and principles, strategic planning and project management.

 Education and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree and completion of an American Library Association accredited Master of Library Science.
  • Three years of experience in a library environment with management in an urban, multi-branch public library that demonstrates knowledge of public and technical services, including cataloging, library collections, service delivery technology, and service evaluation. 

The City has a residency requirement. New hires must be residents of Springfield within one year of the date of hire, and maintain city residency. The annual salary for this challenging and rewarding job is $61,488, with a generous benefits package available after a six month probationary period.
