FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

In support of the campus mission, strategic plans and values, Queens College seeks to fill one or more tenure track Assistant/Associate/Full Professor vacancies in the Graduate School of Library and Information Studies (GSLIS), starting from the 2022 Fall semester. Assistant/Associate/Full Professors perform graduate-level teaching, research and guidance duties in area(s) of expertise. Full-time faculty generally teach one or more of the core courses. They share responsibility for committee and department assignments including administrative, supervisory, and other functions.

The GSLIS is the only publicly supported American Library Association accredited school of library and information studies in the metropolitan New York City area. The GSLIS offers a broad curriculum. In addition to the M.L.S. degree, it offers a 30 credit Certificate of Post-Master’s Studies in Librarianship, a Certificate in Archives and Preservation of Cultural Materials, a Certificate in Children’s and Young Adult Services in Public Libraries, three programs for the preparation of New York State certified School Library Media Specialists, and a dual master’s degree program (jointly offered with the History department) in Library Science and History (MLS/MA). The GSLIS has a large and highly diverse student body, less than twenty percent of whom attend full-time.

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will have experience teaching in higher education and a demonstrated record or potential for research and service. Candidates must possess a Ph.D. in library/information science or a related field or the equivalent with preference given to those applicants with at least one earned graduate degree in library/information science and experience as a practitioner. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution. Evidence of attaining external funding is needed for rank of Associate and Full Professor.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of research, and service at the graduate level to merit appointment at the City University of New York; experience in library/information science education; and excellent communication skills.

Qualified candidates will have research and teaching expertise as well as practical experience in two or more of the following areas:

  • Children’s and young adult services in public libraries
  • Child and adolescent development, youth literacy development
  • Traditional and current children and young adult fiction and nonfiction materials, both in print and other formats; including but not limited to, picture books, graphic novels, and games.
  • Youth activism and social justice
  • Digital equity, diversity and inclusion as they pertain to multiple audiences, including but not limited to non-native speakers of English, racial and ethnic diversity, gender, sexual orientation, ability/disability, national origin, and ancestry.
  • Data justice, critical internet studies or community informatics.
  • Computational approaches to LIS
  • Indigenous knowledge systems, tribal libraries, archives and museums, Indigenous data sovereignty, place based methods
