Temporary Instructional Services Librarian, Oliver Wendell Holmes Library, Andover, MA

Description:

The Oliver Wendell Holmes Library at Phillips Academy Andover seeks a personable, energetic, creative, and self-directed individual to become a temporary member of our Instructional Librarian Team. The successful candidate will be responsible for working with colleagues to improve instruction and reference services, enhance student learning in traditional and online environments, and maintain subject collections in assigned liaison areas. This is a temporary, 25-hour per week position, Tuesday through Friday, 8:30am-3pm with the ability to work 12pm-8pm two Sundays out of the term. This assignment will run through July 2022 with the possibility of extension. 

The successful candidate will:

  • Participate in the Library’s instruction program; planning, teaching, and assessing teacher-requested instruction sessions.
  • Provide reference and research assistance to the community.
  • Identify and select materials for purchase in given subject areas.
  • Participate in professional development activities.

Qualifications Required:

  • Master’s degree in one of the following disciplines from an accredited institution: education, library and/or information science, history and or social science
  • Three to five years of experience in, and enthusiasm for, developing and teaching effective library instruction sessions and curricula.
  • Ability to communicate about current information and emerging technologies.
  • Current experience in providing reference services and conducting one-on-one consultative reference interviews.
  • Knowledge of major databases used in an academic environment.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a team environment.
  • Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Availability to work weeknights and weekends.
  • A background check must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position at Phillips Academy.

Preferred:

  • A Master’s degree in library and/or information science or a background in history, economics, or the political sciences.
  • Experience working with teens and an understanding of their mindset and interests.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment.
