Head of Adult Services & Reference (Full-time). Falmouth Public Library, Falmouth, MA

Due to a retirement, the Falmouth Public Library has an opening for a dynamic and enthusiastic Head of Adult Services. The Falmouth Public Library is a well-supported and well-loved busy library which is frequented by the residents of Falmouth and the surrounding towns, as well as by our share of the tens of thousands summer visitors to Falmouth. The Main Library houses the largest adult and juvenile physical collections on Cape Cod. 

This is a senior level, highly responsible supervising librarian position, with oversight of both the Adult and Teen Services. This person plans, organizes and oversees services for adults and teens, including reference, programming, selection of materials, collection management, and outreach. They perform reader’s advisory and engage with the community supporting both traditional and social media. As the Head of Adult Services, they are responsible for all activities of the department directly supervising and evaluating 3 full-time professional librarians and one part-time library assistant. As a Department Head, they participate in meetings related to all library services and activities.

Workdays are Monday-Thursday, every other Friday or Saturday on a weekly rotating basis, with some nights as needed, plus occasional Sunday afternoons from November through April. 

Qualifications:

  • Education: Masters degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited institution
  • Experience:  Over three years of increasingly responsible professional library experience, including proven supervisory experience and reference experience.
  • Knowledge: Broad knowledge of principles and practices of professional library work supporting the library’s role in providing free and equal access to ideas, information, resources, and services.
  • Intensive knowledge of automated library systems, staff management and collection development, reference sources including electronic databases, reliable Internet resources, online reference software, the organization and management of library reference operations, and broad knowledge of adult literature titles and authors.
  • Abilities: Ability to relate well to people; ability to express oneself orally and in writing effectively; ability to direct a professional staff: to develop and maintain effective library relationships with library patrons and community organizations. Must demonstrate flexibility, initiative, creativity, judgment and tact.
  • Skills: Interpersonal and problem solving skills; excellent customer service skills; management and supervisory skills; planning and organizational skills; computer skills; Internet searching skills; technology skills; social media skills.

Special Work Schedule Requirements:
Travel between three library buildings and throughout the community is expected.
