The Public Health Museum is starting an exciting initiative to digitize records of the historic Tewksbury State Hospital thanks to grant funding from Mass Humanities. The goal is digitization of the Tewksbury State Hospital intake records, which when completed, will be accompanied by a genealogy program, a virtual exhibit, and a website redesign showcasing our newly digitized content.
As part of our initiative, we are seeking a Museum Digitization Intern. As a digitization intern, you will be an important member of the collections team working towards preserving records in perpetuity and making collections widely available to researchers and the public. This position is responsible for imaging, databasing, and uploading and publishing digital content to Omeka. The internship will be for 20 hours a week across a 10 week period. The intern will be paid a stipend of $1,200 for their work at the end of the internship.
The Project Director will provide an overview of the project, provide training on utilizing the digitization equipment, and provide supervision and support for the intern throughout the term. The intern will also have the opportunity to become familiar with the Public Health Museum, its collections and offerings.
Qualifications are:
- Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in education and experience
- Interest in museum or collections career
- Able to commit to the full 10 week internship term
- Self-motivated and able to work independently as well as part of a team
- Have incredible attention to detail and highly organized
- Ability to problem-solve (troubleshoot) independently
- Willing and able to complete repetitive, yet detail-oriented tasks
- Familiarity with Omeka and digitization preferred.
