The Role

ITHAKA is seeking a Manager to head the effort to make JSTOR freely available to all Higher Education in Prison (HEP) programs.  jstor-access-in-prison  Since 2007, JSTOR has been committed to expanding access to its digital library inside prisons ,  providing pilot programs with both offline and direct access solutions.  As we expand our support for prison education, we seek a manager for this effort to guide the development and rollout of direct and offline solutions.  

The JSTOR Access in Prison Initiative aims to expand access to JSTOR for incarcerated learners in over 150 HEP programs in the US within the next three years.  The Manager, JSTOR Access in Prison Initiative, will be a member of the JSTOR Labs team (https://labs.jstor.org).

This is a fixed-term, grant-funded position for 36-months.

Responsibilities

The Manager will be responsible for:

  • Promotion of JSTOR Access in Prison to the community using a variety of media and methods.
  • Negotiation  with and creation of  ongoing relationships with HEP programs, departments of corrections, academic libraries, technology providers and, incarcerated learners.  
  • Management of the rollout of JSTOR access to HEP programs including: growing the base of participating institutions, training and supporting HEP administrators and faculty, ensuring that administrative paperwork is in order and tracked, and ensuring that students using the system have an experience as close as possible to that as their peers on the outside. 
  • Prioritization and management of hardware and software development and maintenance, working with the project team to provide the best possible experience to the largest number of people. 
  • Creation and instantiation of a sustainability plan, ensuring that this access can continue to be provided free of charge to HEP programs and students in perpetuity once the grant period ends. Experience and Skills

The ideal candidate will have the following personal qualities:

  • Entrepreneurial: capable of leading a team to a demonstrable impact through complicated and uncertain terrain.
  • Capable of building productive relationships and negotiating with a wide variety of stakeholders.  
  • Familiar and well-versed with the Department of Corrections and technology requirements involved with using technology to support prison education, with both a practical and values-oriented approach to resolving tensions inherent to working in this space.
  • Committed to our organizational values of belonging, evidence, speed, teamwork, and trust.

The ideal candidate will have the following skills & experience:

  • 3-5 years working in fields related to higher education in prison and with a network of productive working relationships in the field. Experience across multiple states working with corrections leadership is desired.  
  • 3-5 years experience managing initiatives.
  • Stellar verbal and written communication skills.
  • Technical product development experience is desired.
  • Criminal system impacted candidates are deeply encouraged to apply.

The pay range for this position in Colorado is $105,000 – $125,000 per year; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.  A full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the position offered may be included.
