Iwasaki Library’s Teaching, Learning, & Assessment department seeks a temporary Instruction and Reference Librarian to support library instruction and reference services for the upcoming Fall semester. This position will be partially remote and partially on-campus according to the needs of students and faculty, with the understanding that the campus may return to full- time on-campus services and the role will adjust accordingly. This position will provide essential support to the Library’s Teaching, Learning, & Assessment department by conducting library instruction sessions both in person and remotely; creating online tutorials and teaching resources, and helping to assess the library’s impact on student learning. This position will also provide reference services, responding to reference email queries, monitoring chat, etc., and may be required to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • At the direction of the Teaching, Learning, & Assessment leadership, teach introductory-level information literacy library sessions in-person or remotely depending on faculty and student learning needs. The person in this role will work extensively with the library’s partners in the Fundamentals of Speech Communication courses using an established curriculum.
  • Collaborate with School Librarians to deliver course-specific content in one-shot instruction sessions. 
  • Under the direction of the Reference Coordinator, provide reference and research services by answering questions, advising on appropriate resources, and instructing patrons in the use of the online catalog and other electronic databases. The schedule may include evening and weekend work as needed. 

Other Responsibilities

  • In partnership with teaching and learning colleagues, assist with designing and delivering online tutorials, digital learning objects, and other teaching materials.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Minimum qualifications and experience

  • A Master’s degree in Library Science or Library and Information Science from an American Library Association accredited institution; or equivalent educational experience in a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Teaching or instruction experience, either on the job or through graduate-level coursework.
  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate principles of inclusion, diversity, equity, accessibility, and sustainability into services, programs, and collections related to the work of the position.
  • Excellent reference interview skills and interpersonal communication skills. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively.

Preferred qualifications and experience 

  • One year of reference and instruction experience in an academic setting.
  • Experience with course management systems.
  • Familiarity with instructional technology and instructional design. 
  • Demonstrated instructional experience in remote learning environments.
  • Familiarity with using reference collections, library catalogs, and other electronic resources. 
  • Experience creating online learning materials such as research guides and tutorials.
  • Outreach and assessment experience in an academic library.
