SALARY: $15.83/hour

POSITION SUMMARY

The Youth Services Assistant works seven hours per week in the Youth Services department to provide evening and weekend services to the library community. The ideal candidate has a solid background in youth services, knowledge of print and non-print materials pertinent to children and young adults, and the desire to work with youth ranging in age from infants to teenagers as well as their families and care providers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Staff the Youth Services department seven hours per week; Wednesday evenings from 4pm-8pm, and Saturdays from 10am-1pm.
  • Provide both reference and circulation services for the Youth Services Department.
  • Assist youth, caregivers, and teachers in finding suitable materials for their educational and recreational needs.
  • Assist patrons with on-line catalog searches
  • Process Youth Services inter-library loan requests.
  • Assist with general upkeep of the Youth Services Department and its materials.
  • Assist Youth Services Librarian with community outreach programs when applicable.
  • Perform other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

Minimum Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with youth in a library, school, or similar setting.
  • Sufficient computer skills to perform the job, including comfort with learning how to use library circulation software. Familiarity with Google Suite is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of children’s and young adult literature.
  • Physical ability to kneel, squat, stand, reach, and lift materials up to 30 pounds.
  • Must be courteous and use good judgment when working with staff and patrons.
  • Must be reliable and punctual.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of patron records.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with the public and with co-workers.
  • Willingness to work with other library departments as a team to ensure staffing coverage and professional service to all library users. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

The work is performed in an office environment, and in common space open to the public. The work may require motor skills for activities such as using office equipment, including but not limited to telephones, personal computers, handheld technology, and other office equipment. May be required to lift objects such as files, office supplies, and library materials weighing up to 30 pounds. Will need to re-shelve, read, and retrieve materials at floor level and overhead. Essential position functions require ability to routinely read materials for general understanding and analytical purposes and ability to view documents on a computer screen.
