Director, Clarke Historical Library (Central Michigan University), Mount Pleasant, MI

Reporting to the Dean of University Libraries and in cooperation with the Clarke Historical Library Board of Governors, the Director of the Clarke Historical Library exercises leadership, oversight and management of the library. Primary responsibilities of the director include: administration of the Clarke Historical Library, staff supervision, development and promotion of the collection and of library services, development and promotion of outreach activities, development and promotion of non-university funding opportunities.

Required Qualifications

  • ALA accredited Master’s degree in Library or Information Science or MA in American History or American Studies.
  • At least six years of professional experience in special collections library, records management, or archives.
  • At least four years of successful supervisory experience with increasing managerial responsibility.
  • Knowledge regarding preservation of historical materials.
  • Knowledge regarding digital preservation programs, methods, and external contracting.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Public service orientation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ten or more years of professional or managerial experience in special collections library or archives preferred.
  • Ph.D. in American History or American Studies.
  • Evidence of service in professional organizations.
  • Knowledge of children’s literature.
  • Evidence of relevant, peer-reviewed scholarly publications.
  • Experience or training in public history.
  • Experience or training in archival work.
  • Experience or training in rare books.
  • Knowledge of relevant resources and information regarding the library’s collecting areas.
  • Experience in grant writing, preferably with examples of success.
  • Experience in private fundraising and seeking gifts-in-kind, preferably with examples of success.
  • Experience in promotional activities.
  • Familiarity with digital outreach.
  • Experience with physical or digital exhibit design and construction.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Leads in the creation, review, and implementation of mission, goals, and policies for the Clarke Historical Library in alignment with the university’s mission.
  • Facilitates and serves as an ex officio member of the Clarke Historical Library Board of Governors.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining an active outreach program for educational purposes and to attract donations of material and financial support to the library.
  • Oversees the speaker’s series, writes newsletter articles and blog posts, and makes presentations to community groups.
  • Secures outside funding for the library, including both major gift fundraising and grant proposals, and collaborates with Advancement and the Dean of University Libraries as required.
  • Collaborates within the libraries and university to advance mutual goals and initiatives.
  • Oversees all services and operations of the Clarke Historical Library to ensure the successful achievement of library goals and initiatives.
  • Supervises employees.
