Youth Services Librarian, Dedham Public Library, Dedham, MA

The Town of Dedham is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Youth Services Librarian. Under the direction of the Library Director, this position is responsible for planning and implementing children’s programs, collection development, supporting local school curriculum, providing reference and circulation services to children and caregivers, and assisting patrons with technology.

Education and Experience

  • MLIS degree required; equivalent experience considered.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill

  • Experience working with a diverse user community inclusive of all ages, ability and background.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and devotion to hospitality in public service.
  • Kindness, patience, and flexibility.
  • Ability to be highly collaborative, and coordinate programming for birth to 18 years with peers and outside performers and organizations.
  • Experience creating promotional material as well as social media engagement.
  • 1-3 years experience in public event planning.
  • Knowledge of the developmental needs of children at various ages, and corresponding library services and materials.
  • Attention to detail and strong aptitude in written and oral communication.
  • Knowledge of current library trends, specifically within youth services.
  • The ability to integrate emerging technologies into traditional children’s services.
  • Marketing and grant writing skills are highly desirable.
  • Bilingual, or with functional knowledge of another language.
  • Available to work evenings and Saturdays, in addition to special events.
  • Position works at the Main Library as well as the Endicott Branch Library

Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Plans, organizes, directs, and implements programs and activities for children both at the library and at off-site locations; participates in library programming designing for adult patrons.
  • Provides reference and reader advisory services for children, caregivers, teachers, and community organizations.
  • Provides monthly and annual statistics on use of resources, reference questions, program attendance, and program expenditures to the Library Director.
  • Responsible for ordering material and maintaining the collections for the Youth Services Department.
  • Supervises the Youth Services Library Assistant.
  • Liaises and maintains strong relationships with various organizations and individuals to provide outstanding outreach for the library. 
  • Conducts outreach visits to preschools, public and private schools, community organizations, and scouting groups.
  • Responsible for maintaining a welcoming and inviting physical and virtual library environment for children that supports learning and recreational activities.
  • Prepares promotional material related to the Youth Services Department.
  • Maintains strong connections to relevant professional organizations.
  • Performs all other library work and participates in special library projects as required or necessary.
