Director of Library Exploration and Research, Brown University Library, Providence, RI

The Director of Library Exploration and Research will provide overall leadership for the University Library’s new Center for Library Exploration and Research (CLEAR) with a mission to build and nurture an academic community for students, faculty, and library staff.  Working collaboratively with library and University leadership, the Director of Library Exploration and Research will develop and lead a program that brings greater focus, coordination, and accessibility to Library activities that advance students’ research capabilities in three domains:  core tools and methods, data, and primary sources.

CLEAR is an unprecedented new venture at the Library, and the inaugural Director will contribute to refining the vision as well as implementing it.  The Director will report directly to the Deputy University Librarian and also work closely with the University Librarian and Associate University Librarian for Special Collections on CLEAR’s strategic development.  As part of the Library’s overall leadership team, the Director will be a member of the Operational Planning Group and other key Library committees.

The position requires a high degree of collaborative leadership.  With strong support from the Library’s senior administrators, the Director will work closely with the directors and expert staff of other core Library departments (including Academic Engagement, Center for Digital Scholarship, Special Collections) that will be critical for CLEAR’s success.  The Director will also develop collaborative partnerships with key campus partner offices, as well as with the faculty and students that CLEAR’s programs will serve.  As part of developing and implementing CLEAR’s activities, the Director will work with the Library’s Director of Planning and Assessment and assessment experts at the Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning to define metrics and qualitative data for tracking progress on key goals.

Job Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in librarianship or related fields, or combination of an advanced degree in a relevant subject area and experience in libraries, archives, museums, or similar institutions
  • Minimum of 5 years of related professional work
  • Prior work or expertise in educational outreach and academic community-building, and/or successful implementation of library-based academic support initiatives
  • Academic or professional training in curricular design and program development
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting and working with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion in the workplace, and to advancing these values in instruction, engagement, and professional practice
  • Intercultural sensitivity and cultural competence/cultural humility
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
