The Wyner Family Jewish Heritage Center (JHC) at New England Historic Genealogical Society seeks a detail-oriented and self-motivated individual for the Judith Carberry Garner Archives Internship. Reporting to the Senior Archivist, the intern will support the ongoing digitization of the JHC’s archival collections. 

Hours and Stipend  

This is a six-month internship with the possibility of extension. The intern will receive a monthly stipend of $1,000.00 (4 days per week). Start date is negotiable but preference is the week of August 30, 2021. 

Responsibilities  

  • Digitization of text- and image-based documents using best professional practices  
  • Preparation of digital images and associated metadata for ingest into CONTENTdm repository  
  • Creation, enhancement, and migration of existing metadata from the JHC finding aids 
  • Quality control and quality assurance of digitized images and metadata  
  • Assistance with developing and/or improving workflow procedures  
  • Creation of social media and blog posts pertaining to projects  

Required Qualifications  

  • Enrollment in or recent graduation from a library science or public history program  
  • Specialization or coursework in archives management, cultural heritage, or digital curation  
  • Familiarity with metadata standards relevant to digital collection management and access  
  • Familiarity with scanning tools  
  • Familiarity with image editing software  
  • Proficiency with common Office applications, especially Excel  
  • Attention to detail and organization skills  

Preferred Qualifications  

  • Completion of or enrollment in classes related to archives, digital libraries, digital stewardship, information organization, or equivalent coursework  
  • Previous experience with photo editing software  
  • Previous experience with CONTENTdm or other digital repository systems  
  • Experience with or interest in Jewish and immigration history  
  • Reading fluency in Hebrew, Yiddish, or Polish are not required, but may be helpful

It is the only historical center dedicated to, and specializing in, New England Jewish history. The Judith Carberry Garner Internship is named in memory of former Jewish Heritage Center director and archivist, Judi Garner, who began her career with these collections as an intern while a graduate student at Simmons University.
