Princeton University Library seeks two versatile Metadata Librarians to join the Cataloging and Metadata Services (CaMS) department. CaMS is a multidisciplinary group of talented individuals working collaboratively to support the teaching, learning, and research mission of Princeton University by providing efficient, thorough, and accurate access to the Library’s holdings in a variety of formats and languages.

The Metadata Librarians are responsible for creating original and enhancing existing metadata for materials in all formats. The focus of these positions is on the efficient creation of bibliographic and authority data to facilitate discovery in the Library’s online catalog and global use and re-use.

Princeton University Library is one of the world’s leading research libraries, supporting a diverse community of 5,200 undergraduates, 2,700 graduate students, 1,200 faculty members, and many visiting scholars. Its holdings include more than 7 million printed volumes, 85 thousand manuscripts, 2 million non-print items, and extensive collections of digital text, data, and images. The Library employs a dedicated and knowledgeable staff of more than 300 people working in a large central library, nine specialized branches, and three storage facilities.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Perform original and complex cataloging for materials in all formats, conforming to national and local standards.
  • Perform associated authority control work (names, series, and subjects) as necessary to maintain database integrity.
  • Contribute bibliographic and authority records to the Program for Cooperative Cataloging via the Library’s participation in BIBCO, NACO, and SACO.
  • Use software applications and tools (e.g., MarcEdit, OpenRefine, Python) to manipulate data.
  • Assist with special cataloging projects (e.g., music scores and CDs, rare materials, DVDs, etc.).
  • Participate in professional activities, scholarship, and committee assignments within the Library, on campus, and in professional associations at a level to meet criteria for continuing appointment.
  • Maintain current knowledge of national and international developments and trends in cataloging, metadata, and related areas.

Key Qualifications Required

  • Proficiency in a non-English language (Spanish, Portuguese, or Slavic languages highly preferred).
  • Graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • Minimum three years of cataloging experience.
  • Experience that demonstrates knowledge of metadata content standards and tools including Resource Description and Access) (RDA), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), and Library of Congress Classification (LCC).
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to work in a collegial, team
  • environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Preferred

  • Experience working and cataloging in an academic library or other cultural heritage institution
