Wellesley College seeks a dynamic, team-oriented Science Librarian to support library collections, research, and instruction in the science disciplines taught at the College. The Science Librarian works collaboratively to develop, manage, and maintain the Library’s collections in the sciences; prepares and delivers course-integrated instruction; and provides research support, reference services, and individual consultations to members of the community to support science education and research at the College.

Wellesley College is a private, nonprofit liberal arts college for women founded in 1870.  With its rich mix of print, media, and online resources, the Library provides access to one of the finest undergraduate collections in the country. 

Key responsibilities:

As a member of the Library Collections group and the Scholarly Resource Services team, selects appropriate materials and formats to support the curriculum in the sciences. Evaluates new and existing library materials within a complex information landscape.

Provides course-integrated research and instruction and support in knowledge and behaviors of information literacy within science disciplines, including reflective discovery of information, the understanding of how information is produced and valued, and the use of information in creating new knowledge and participating ethically in communities of learning.

Provides individual consultations on research strategies to Community members; consults with faculty members to ensure availability of library materials to support classroom instruction; provides programs and services designed to educate new and existing users in effective use of library materials.

Maintains awareness of trends in science librarianship.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent.
  • Coursework at the undergraduate or graduate level in a science discipline.
  • An understanding of the mission of higher education and the required support of library resources. 
  • Ability to evaluate library materials according to institutional criteria and guidelines.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the organization and classification of information resources (national and international standards).
  • Oral and written communication skills; teaching and presentation skills that include the use of information technology when appropriate.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Commitment to fostering an equitable and inclusive workplace, and an ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population.
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in a science discipline taught at Wellesley College.
  • Understanding of the liberal arts model of higher education.
  • Experience with collection development in an academic or research library.
  • Experience delivering course-integrated library instruction, research support, and individual consultations in a higher education setting.
