Rank: This position reports to the Manager of the UT Southwestern Medical Center Special Collections and Archives unit. Appointment rank will be commensurate with academic accomplishments and experience. This is a nontenured faculty position.
Department Name: UT Southwestern Medical Center Health Sciences Digital Library and Learning Center – Special Collections and Archives Unit.
Salary Range: $55,000 – $65,000

Experience and Education

  • MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited graduate school or equivalent degree.
  • Two years of experience working on digitization projects, managing digital collections, or other digital
    library-related work applying digital preservation practices and standards using current technologies and
    software.
  • Experience with applying administrative, descriptive, and technical metadata for digitized and born digital archival materials.
  • Experience working with CONTENTdm, Archives Space, or equivalent collections management systems as well as D-Space or equivalent repository software.
  • Experience with disk imaging, digital forensics tools, and/or digital preservation management software.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, analytical and organizational skills, and experience establishing positive and productive collaborations in a university setting.
  • Familiarity with Encoded Archival Description (EAD), Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS), and Dublin Core (DCMI) with a background in Archives Management.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Responsible for acquiring and processing born digital collections and materials, including the appraisal, accessioning, arrangement, and description within the collecting scope of the University Archives.
  • Advises University Archivist on appraisal strategy, as well as privacy and security issues as they apply to the context of born-digital records.
  • Responsible for performing web and social media archiving and works to remove data from legacy storage media and apply digital preservation standards and practices.
  • Works with partners, such as the Texas Digital Library, to maintain and deposit materials into UT Southwestern’s institutional repository.
  • Works with digital preservation vendors such as Archive-It to ensure the proper collection and storage of archival materials.
  • Works to ensure that digital content in the collections is accessible to appropriate audiences, following the strictures of privacy concerns, copyright regulations, and donor restrictions.
  • Works closely with University Archivist to determine priorities for digitization projects and supervises digitization efforts performed by student workers, staff, or outside vendors.
  • In consultation with the University Archivist, selects and implements software and systems as appropriate.
  • Attends professional development training to stay current on digital preservation and archival practices.
  • Provides reference services to and engages in outreach with the UTSW community to raise the profile of the Archives on campus.
  • Seeks opportunities for collaboration and partnership through campus initiatives, campus projects, grant funding, etc. and performs consultations with departments and donors on the preservation of born digital records.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40lbs.
  • This position may be eligible for a hybrid remote/onsite work schedule, if applicable.

This person will work in the University Archives and Special Collections unit of the Library.
