After more than a decade of preparation, fundraising, and community outreach efforts, the Peterborough Town Library staff will reopen the newly renovated and rebuilt library on September 12th. The beautiful new building will feature two levels of service, five meeting rooms, an enclosed youth service area, ADA spaces, an art gallery, and more!

Position Title: Library Assistant

Schedule: Part-time, 20 hours, flexible, including evenings and occasional Saturday rotation

Compensation: $15.00 per hour DOE

GENERAL SUMMARY

Under supervision of the Director, responsible for managing the library meeting hall bookings, event calendars, and procedures. Assists in Patron Services department by creating a welcoming environment for patrons. Provides basic reference services, technical instruction, reader’s advisory, and friendly customer service. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:*

  • Maintains the Meeting Room calendar and bookings software module. Keeps staff informed of all bookings and important information, creates organized booking schedule, records booking statistics.
  • Ensures all meeting rooms are set-up correctly for events and acts as main contact for renting parties. Manages all payments, customer communication, and data entry for bookings.
  • Communicates with library staff often about booking and room reservations in order to maintain an optimized schedule for renting parties and library programming.
  • Trains staff on bookings software and procedures. Checks and oversees other staff who have made bookings. 
  • Maintains meeting room spaces by routinely checking them at end of events or assigning other staff. Ensures rooms remain in great condition and any damages are appropriately and immediately addressed.
  • Covers help desk as scheduled. Interacts with library patrons, answers phones, assists patrons and callers with routine questions and directs them to appropriate departments or staff.  Explains routine library policies.
  • Assists with opening and closing procedures and tasks. Ensures all safety procedures are followed and building is secure.
  • Processes library checkouts, renewals, returns, holds and registrations, utilizing the integrated library system. 
  • Assists patrons wireless printing and technology instruction at public computers.
  • Provides quality customer service to patrons and offers assistance with basic reference, reader’s advisory, program recommendations, community connections, referrals to other resources, and tech instruction.
  • Provides assistance to Adult and Children’s Department as needed, including supporting programs, assisting with collection development, reader’s advisory services, and contributing creative ideas.
