The Thomas P. O’Neill Library at Boston College is seeking a Reference Assistant. This is an excellent opportunity for currently enrolled library and information science graduate students to apply library knowledge and reference service skills at a reference desk with a reputation for high standards.

Responsibilities

Provide excellent reference services to library patrons in person and/or via video and chat depending on circumstances. Types of services provided include database and research tool selection, ready reference, basic technology support, directional assistance, and referral. Work on special projects as needed, including reviewing and updating material in FAQs and other online resources.

Qualifications

Required:  

  • An understanding of information organization, research practices, library research databases, and library support services.
  • Excellent reference service skills. 
  • Current enrollment in a MLIS/MLS program. 

Preferred:

  • Completion of reference coursework.
  • Availability for weekday daytime hours during Summer 2021

Details about the opening:

  • Academic year 2021-2022
    • Up to 4 shifts Monday through Thursday,  4pm to 9pm, starting in late August 2021, and continuing through late May, 2022.  
  • Summer 2021:
    • Preference will be given to candidates who are available up to 5 hours/week June through August 2021, during daytime hours: M-Th 9am-5pm, F 9am-3pm, for training and staffing assistance.
  • Pay rate is $16.00/hour.
